Really like the player and the person, but we're looking pretty set for defensive talent moving forward and business is business. Obviously would like to have him in the fold but if they can't agree on terms then will wish him luck in finding what he's looking for elsewhere.

OK is one of those players you wish good things for ahead of "loyalty" or whatever people expect from players that are within their rights to seek the best deal for themselves.

There are presently limited open slots on the team, especially if you want to include some youth, so I'm hoping they weaponize their cap room >> signing UFAs. Who on the back end could be added by the Flames in return for some draft capital and/or prospects? Orlov?

I hope the Flames acquire Monahan .. and then trade either Kadri or Backlund. Preferably Backlund.

Then, make Monahan the new captain and he will be our new old guy during this rebuild.

In 2031, the Flames captain will pass off the cup to 36 year old Monahan who will be retiring.
