I dunno, it feels more like repealing Obamacare is the football in this metaphor and McConnell is the loser with the zigzag stripe on his shirt.
Senate Republicans suffered a dramatic failure early Friday in their bid to advance a scaled-back plan to overhaul the Affordable Care Act, throwing into question whether they can actually repeal the 2010 health law.
Their latest effort to redraw the ACA failed after Sen. John McCain’s decision to side with a couple other Republicans against President Trump and GOP leaders. The Arizona Republican, diagnosed with brain cancer last week, returned to Washington Tuesday and delivered a stirring address calling for a bipartisan approach to overhauling the ACA, while criticizing the process that produced the current legislation.
It was a speech that laid the groundwork for Friday’s dramatic vote.
The vote was 49 to 51.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had hoped to approve the new, narrower rewrite of the health law at some point Friday, after facing dozens amendments from Democrats. But the GOP defections left McConnell without a clear path forward.
Quote:
McConnell’s draft rattled both moderates – Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) were the other Republican votes in opposition – and Republicans who wanted a more robust uprooting of the existing law.
“I’m not going to tell people back in South Carolina that this product actually replaces Obamacare, because it does not, it is a fraud,” Graham said at a Thursday evening news conference with McCain and Johnson at his side.

Pleasantly surprised with McCain. Best part was seeing McConnell just standing there in what appeared to be disbelief. Also kudos to Collins and Murkawski, those two women have had bigger cajones than all the male GOP senators this week.
Well I went to bed because I assumed it was a forgone conclusion, so colour me shocked that even the thinnest version of getting rid of Obamacare still couldn't pass. And while McCain deserves credit for coming around, he doesn't deserve all the articles he'll get today (and I've already seen a few) talking about being a maverick yet again. The real mavericks here were Collins and Murkowski who were against this from the beginning. Murkowski in particular stood up to the Trump Crime Family and their mafia tactics of trying to intimidate her into voting for this.
But the best part here is Trump and co were hoping to spend today trashing the media for not focusing on their healthcare "win" and instead talking about the palace intrigue of Tony Moochtana, and now they can't even do that. Now will we see them actually try and repair Obamacare instead of repeal? Guess we'll see.

Lol. Not a chance IMO.
For Trump this is not about 'repairing' Obamacare. Given his complete ignorance of what any these proposals actually contained, I don't think he has one iota of interest in the topic of health care (apart from the money it's costing him and his wealthy golfing buddies). As with many things that come out of this administration, I think the real answer is much more simple-minded and petty.
This whole thing is about the Trump and the GOP getting a 'win' over Obama. He and his minions I'm sure will reconvene and devise some other way to sabotage the current system so that it completely collapses and becomes unsustainable, thereby 'proving' his bizarre predictions to be true. And however they do it, they'll make sure it's at the expense of low and middle income taxpayers and not corporate elites like themselves.

The comments by the GOP after the loss were disappointing. They seemed to really be projecting what they would have done if the situation was reversed. And of course the gop base will eat up the fearmongering.

Of course Trump has no interest in healthcare (or any other policy for that matter). That's exactly why repair can work, he'll sign whatever they put on his desk and he'll consider it "a win". Considering he's eating loss after loss, just signing anything will constitute a win for him. I also think now that the black man is gone, they'll remember that Obamacare is actually a Heritage Foundation idea, and will be happy to let the orange man sign effectively the same bill instead. The problem for them is Obamacare is actually popular now that people on the right realize it's also known as the ACA. Letting it collapse will have consequences as well, and as much as they'd like to pin it on Dems, the ruling party is always the one who takes the hit.

but you still need to get a bill in front of Trump in the first place...
And that means the GOP senators and house have to agree to it.
The members of congress passed the trumpcare bill along to the house, with many having zero idea what was in it... simply to kick the can done the road after a number of failed attempts to come up with an actual plan on their own.
The Senate had 45! GOP Senators vote Yes on Repeal only...!
Will the GOP be magnanimous in defeat and now work with the Democrats to fix something the majority of campaigned on repeal and replacing?
I highly doubt it.
For the Democrats they need to try to hammer on this and keep trying to emphasize the GOPs handiwork in not fixing things and making them own that failure...This is to score political points however....as i do not believe that the GOP will work with the Democrats...
I mean did you watch McConnell's speech in its entirety? He's a petulant, lying POS... and there's at least 45 Senators that share that attitude.

I don't know how much this falls on Trump. As stated by many posters above, the GOP has been whining about Obamacare since it's implementation 7 years ago. Trump ran on getting rid of Obamacare and won everything. Presidency, house, and senate. The GOP should have a plan right? They have nothing.
Trump came up with healthcare bill 1. They said no.
Then healthcare bill 2. They said no again.
Then Trump basically said, F-it you guys figure it out. McConnell, find the simplest, easiest loophole in the system to get the ball rolling down the hill.
I don't think Trump really cares about healthcare but this is the GOPs baby so he'll sign anything they come up with. They couldn't even do that!
