Before arriving on the worst team in the league as a waiver pickup, Emberson had precisely zero NHL games to his credit.

That would be very odd if true. It would mean that the Hawks demoted the guy who took the blame, and gave his job to the guy who was actually responsible for the screwup.

Oilers fans seem to think it’s some sort of grand idea to create cap space so they can make a move at the deadline.
Have fun playing Nurse/Emberson (who?)/Stecher in your top 4 until the deadline

What do you mean, until the deadline?
The deadline is the time to acquire EVEN MORE forwards! Defence is for losers!

Nobody outside Edminton, Calgary and maybe St Louis cares any. At all. Typical Oiler fluffing

The offer sheets have been absolutely the only tumbleweed blowing across the barren desert for diehard NHL fans over the past few weeks. Everyone is loving it. It has been a great source of entertainment over a period of time that is usually dead.
Hopefully the Laine trade is a sign that hockey news will start picking up as the preseason approaches.

From Friedman:
Still 75 minutes until deadline for matching Philip Broberg/Dylan Holloway offer sheets…but, judging from the last week's moves (adding a young defenceman and a young forward), it appears Oilers will not match and allow both players to join St. Louis.
Expecting formal announcements from the teams themselves some time this morning.

Wow. Surprising, to me at least. But hey, Oilers get worse. Cant complain about that.

Just moments ago, The Athletic says the Oilers have declined to match St Louis' offers. Broberg and Halloway are now Blues.
Spector must be apoplectic after his article praising the Oiler's cap wizardry to sign both players.

What? Didn't you hear that the Leafs named Matthews as their captain?

I recall hearing something similar at the time. I don't recall Bowman being named though but Tallon took the blame because he's the leader of the management and they failed to get an easy job done.

Some great salt over in the mines of moria right now:

Imagine if the oilers just went out and landed 2 young top 15 picks with cup experience for just a couple middling picks and cap space. Imagine if they did that back in like 2016? We would have burnt the city down in celebration.
It was always “You have to trade the league MVP to get Adam Larsson” type rhetoric when we needed a D-man, but now its “Oh yea, just flip a couple bucks and a 2nd”
The Oilers are Player Value Anti-Matter. We are an eternal black hole.
Hard to believe we exist at all at this point. Something in the water, the resilience of fans..

At this point the entire offseason is a wash. Why spend on those offfensive players if the defense is a gaping hole past the first pair?
|

"Fix it at the deadline" is not a solution. That is not a championship level defense.

The D is really, really bad. It was already maybe league average with Ceci and Broberg, and now its likely bottom 5 in the entire league. It's pretty crazy that 10 years into McDavid's career and we still have one of the worst D-cores in the league. Bonkers really.

I don't like it. It's funnier when they're confused about why they're NG.

They can make so many moves, now! They could even get a guy like Cody Ceci at the deadline!

Who here had, Oilers would clear the space required to match the sheets through trades and then not bother to match either on their bingo cards?
Pretty wild ending to the saga IMO.
I was pretty high on Holloway and figured he would become a middle six winger for the team. Even at $2.3 million, if Holloway became that player over the course of the contract, it would be a bargain deal.
It appears that either the Oilers decided that the additions of Podkolzin and Emberson would replicate Broberg's and Holloway's contributions to the club, or Kane is not going on IR and they had to just make space for that to happen.
Emberson has the analytics guys in a stir already. Will be interesting to follow this guy through the season to see if there is any merit to what the models are seeing in him.

Sure, they cleared space, but they still would have had to clear space... Yeah, it sounds like Kane on LTIR is the way they were clearing space but who can they add and when to allow for Kane to return when he's ready? This team may even be in tough to make the playoffs. Their defense is abysmal now.

Let's not act like Holloway was anything special. He could be eventually, but that's a big if.
At any rate, it's still beyond enjoyable to see this play out and the team get markedly worse.
