Friends I love you all, and I'm absolutely not a health nut as many in-person friends here can attest to. If you must, please consume those high sugar drinks, in low moderation.

There was is youtube video of a guy making Coke from scratch, trying to follow the original 1886 recipe as closely as possible, and the amount of sugar is insane.
Shall I bring some for you the next time you do my taxes?
I want to say yes...because I have no idea what I'm actually going to get.
I could get some delicious, delicious Mexican Coke which would be great, or...I could get some also very delicious Mexican Coke of which I do not partake.
Its the 'Mystery Box' conundrum.

From the excellent Glen and Friends youtube channel which is a Canadian channel.
Legal Cocaine, meth, and heroin is a completely awful idea. They are highly addictive substances that ruin lives and making them any more accessible in anyway will be a net negative for society. In life people don’t change until not making changes is acutely more painful. Enabling without accountability will just result in more drug use on the streets, more crime ridden tent cities, more random attacks of the public, and no more addicts getting clean.

Ok I’ll do it again with way less snark.
Coke and Heroin are not available anywhere. Covid kinda effed our transportation network. They are around just super expensive and rare. Out of range for an addict.
So if you cant afford your hit, you will find a way. That way around these parts is likely meth. You can make meth pretty easy and cheap, things addicts and most people like. You won’t escape meth if you are an addict. Think you can hop a bus somewhere and change that up? Well as a hobo you would likely go west cuz good weather and all. Well whats out in Vancouver? More meth, same addiction, same problems same results. Go east to less social supports and worse weather and more Meth? Likely worse results than if you stayed in Calgary or went west.
Bring in clean drugs, break that cycle. It does help regardless of your thoughts on it.

I think my issue with it is that normalization.
I can get behind the concept of 'Safe Supply' and safe injection sites....if...there is some back-end process helping people to kick the addiction.
If you're just giving people drugs and a place to do drugs and thats it...theres not a lot of point in that.
Sure, the drugs are safe and the site is safe, but you're not accomplishing anything, you're just kicking the can down the road. Just like Deviaant stated, if they want their drugs, they'll get them, so its just a matter of timing. Its a deferral.
Going back to the concept of 'normalization' I mean, we've been talking about it over and over in this thread.
If all drugs are okay, and its okay to do them anywhere then that seems like its going to start causing a lot of wide-spread problems in a hurry.

Yep. Cocaine is way too easy to get too far into. Intensely pleasurable, relatively quick high and brutal crash…social stigma is probably the only thing left that keeps a coke head on this side of the dirt.
I’ve literally watched good, hard working, traditionally “decent and respectable”, proud people lose the battle cocaine. It’s terrible to watch someone slowly destroy their relationships, health, and financial well being to that vicious dopamine hit. Making it easier for these people to purchase cocaine is absolutely not the answer.
I would need to see some pretty damn compelling data to think otherwise. And no, Portugal didn’t just throw drugs at the drug problem and find success.

It ultimately comes down to the question of why don’t people do coke, heroin or meth. If at the margins legality or availability is the reason then it will increase use. The question is whether safer supply can off balance the easier access.
In general I think a model of legalize tax and treat seems better.

The bigger issue is fentanyl. That is very easy to get in large quantities. You don't need an international criminal network. You can just order it over the internet with Bitcoin.
Meth is awful, but fentanyl is killing people at a much higher rate. Far more potent than heroin and getting your dose off by a grain of sand worth will kill you.
Everything the media is saying about fentanyl is totally true. In fact, I'd argue the media is underreporting the severity of the problem.
