You can't reacquire a player on a retained salary transaction within a year of trading the player away.
That rule also applied to Gio last year even though he was taken by Seattle in the expansion draft rather than a trade. The Leafs were able to acquire him at the deadline with Seattle retaining salary, but the Flames could not.

Even though I was kidding, I didn’t know the 50% retained was the max.

I look at it like this: had we not received a 1st from Florida and sent Monahan with Chucky I’d still be great with that deal. So for me it’s neutral for this off season.

I can’t believe Treliving pulled this one off.
Did not think he’d be able to move Monahan.
The Johnny Mony era is officially over.

Still bummed he's gone. I'm more distraught about Monny leaving than any of the other guys. Total team guy.

This was a solid move by Treliving. You do what you have to, and he did it with ruthless efficiency. Going to miss Monahan as a person, but he needed to go as a player. Well done by Mr. Treliving.

When was the last time the Oilers won a trade?

I tried to answer this question and made it all the way back to 2013 and still haven't found a trade that is a clear win.
I'm actually stunned
- How few meaningful trades that team has made. They have relied ENTIRELY on their high draft picks
- How many bad trades they've made. I love the trade history that starts with Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome and slowly gets worse to the point they have nothing.
- There are some trades that Oil fans will argue were a win, probably most recently Kulak. But in terms of meaningful trades that looking back on were clear wins for the Oilers - it is REALLY hard to find any

I think perhaps the MPS for Perron trade from 2013 is actually the last real win.

Wow so many putting up a lot of stink about losing a 1st round pick in 2 to 4 years. I am really excited for you guys and think this was a cost of doing business move. You aren't happy about it in a vacuum, but as part of the bigger picture, it helps a good offseason for you guys.
For all those complaining, do you really think there were better deals that were turned down???? What else did you guys expect to happen? And even if you have some hypothetical move of Lucic instead of Monahan, it could be argued Lucic brings more this season. So you are giving up the current for a slightly less painful return in 2-4 years???? And said return won't be in the NHL for like 5-7 years????

My concern is that we're going to be paying a 38 year old $7 million. Everyone here seems to think the cap is going to keep rising, and perhaps they're right. There is a possibility that the cap doesn't rise that much and it hamstrings us going forward. I'd never sign a 31 year old to more than a three year deal.
Giving up a first round pick to be able to sign a 31 year old to a seven year deal? Madness.

This is not the 90s, players play really well in their late 30s even if not producing at prime level.

Well sad to se Sean go, I’ve got two jerseys with his name on them in my closet and he’s my avatar but this was a fantastic move. As my buddy bcchris pointed out to me, it’s basically Monahan and a 1st for Kadri. If things go as planned that 1st shouldn’t hold much value and Kadri has immense value over Monahan. Sad to see him go and wish him the best, he’s been a great Flame!

Do they, though? There are less than a handful of skaters playing in the league age 38+ right now.

Then you will never sign a UFA including homegrown stars sometimes.

I wonder how detailed the rule is. Presumably TO wouldn't be able to trade him back to Calgary in a transaction afterwards either. But what if TO waived him and Calgary was the successful claimant?

That's the UFA game, including signing your own players.
We all know the Huberdeau deal and the Kadri deal will stink at the end. That's a fact. But the choice is to not do those deals, not have those players, and not make the playoffs.
Calgary will be rebuilding when those contracts are bad. So, they won't really matter.
