Would have been nicer to have it lower so that there would still be some buyout opportunity if the deal does not age well.
A silver lining to bonuses is that they could help facilitate a dump to cash strapped team after the bonus is paid...or routing through a 3rd team for cap retention.

He'll be due $11.5M over the final 2 years after that bonus is paid.

You know, some posters here think as long as the player is here, he is not worth a bag of pucks. But as long as he is traded to other team, he immediately became the second coming.

Agree wholeheartedly! He just had the most assists by a left winger in NHL history with 85 of them and I cannot find a single highlight video that shows even half or a quarter of them.

I'm spoiled by AC.

Cant wait for the 2022/2023 Jonathan Huberdeau Highlights by AC, part 1, 2, and 3.

This is a great deal for the Flames, I don't even see why people are being negative if you want to sign superstar players you gotta pay up even in their mid-late 30's

It's so after getting the bonus paid, he could be more easily moved.

I wonder about Tarasenko. Could there be a move out of Monahan and looch then a trade and sign of Tarasenko.

But hey...iv had 4 vodkas and a few pipe falls.

Yeah, AC has us used to a certain standard. That video had terrible transitions too, several of them starting before the highlight was complete. Ugh.

Can’t say I love the term, but he likely would have have got 7 yrs in the open market.

I am a little surprised that he agreed to an 8 yr deal to be here considering he has yet to live here, but he also knows he can likely ask for a deal if his family does not like it here.

Kudos to brad as he has been able to remake the team after being dealt a couple of body blows.

I thought AAV a little high, but when you take time to think it's a great job by Brad Treliving.

a) Huberdeau signs in Calgary. He's Canadian. I really appreciate him for doing that!
b) Franchise and team direction makes a full rebound by these moves with some decent cap space coming up on the horizon. Who isn't going to want to play with this playmaker??
c) Johnny Gaudreau has to be having some concerns as regardless of where you fall on the fence, he tarnished his reputation here and left a lot of money on the table. All Bias aside; Huberdeau is a stunning player who is larger and gives us a much needed edge in the playoffs.
d) I agree with FAN960 that our window is more limited so securing that for now is great. That is why Huberdeau is a better fit for us now. While I will always say, it's been a true please to watch Johnny do some of the unreal things he did.
e) Tcachuk lands in a tax haven, with great weather but a significantly weakened team in many's opinion.

What an amazing time to be a fan!

Something not mentioned (that I have seen) but Huberdeau has captained a memorial cup winning team in the past. This is a leader and a winner.

Looch could be moved, as long as it's to a team he likes.

Monny would be very expensive to move.

Would a rebuild be preferable? Had ownership gone scorched earth, 50% salary retained trades of several players may have paid huge dividends.

Whichever strategy allows the Flames to truly contend for the cup (and not just for the playoffs) is preferable to me. So now that the course is set, Treliving still has a lot of work to, and I am excited to see how it turns out!
Thanks, good answer and provides the context that I was missing. On the surface it makes sense but the return of a 100+ point forward and a top pairing defenseman for Tkachuk really change the dynamics of the Flames and considering Gaudreau's and Tkachuk's results as leaders with the Flames maybe it was best to move on from them and start in a new direction. I too am excited to see how it turns out.

I just never like the scorched earth rebuild scenario, I don't think it is an actual reasonable solution. There are a lot of luck involved that you have no control over and if I am not mistaken, from those who wanted to go down this path, it involves getting multiple 1st-4th...or 1st-3rd overall draft picks over a number of years.

Since Buffalo and Edmonton are too easy, I will use Florida as an example. A number of times they have had a series of high drafts so I will use the most recent; 2010 - Gudbranson (3rd OA plus 2 other 1st round picks Bjugstad and Howden), 2011 - Huberdeau (3rd OA), 2013 -Barkov (2nd OA), 2014 - Ekblad (1st OA). So 2010 was when they shipped out Horton and Campbell for Wideman and a 1st round and a 3rd round and Ballard and Oreskovich for Bernier, Grabner and a 1st. They also had 3 - 2nd RP in 2010, 2 - 2nd and 4-3rd RP's in 2014. I really can not argue with the draft picks, none of them were off the board picks at the time. So they sent out some decent pieces got numerous 1st to 3rd round picks and have 1 successful season to show for it.

I like this example because Florida was a great team last season but one could argue could take a step back and finish with 15 to 20 points back from last year. In the past 10 years they have made the playoffs 4 times (or 5 times in the last 12 going back to the 2010 draft). But are they a shoo-in to win the Stanley Cup next year or the year after? Are they even a favorite in the East?

Cap hit doesn't bother me. I think once the pandemic payback is done, the cap will start to go up more than the 1M a year it currently is. Seattle has been added and I don't think the NHL has seen a full 32 revenue year yet.

This seems like long term pain for short term gain I guess. At least the Flames aren't being wishy-washy and putting an exclamation mark on the statement: we want to win now! And I guess we're officially out of Kadri territory now. Man this team really needs a massive bounce back by Monahan.

Nope, but they'd have to move Lucic or Monahan.

This is why you don't dance with sparklers.

exactly this.

People need to remember, we traded Tkachuk to get Huberdeau, but Huberdeau is here to replace Gaudreau's production as a playmaker.

Huberdeau got the same contract that was offer to Gaudreau, so we are really missing the Tkachuk replacement.
Stop comparing Tkachuk to Huberdeau, but Gaudreau to Huberdeau and things become more clear.
