Smith and sometimes Talbot had that same problem. We're used to it.
Would be interesting to see giving up a goal on the first shot on net as a stat and how it affects win% for the team overall.
Too busy/lazy to do the research myself.

Don't worry about it. This hasn't been a problem for Markstrom for a couple years now.

Markstrom was 4th in Vezina voting....he's a legit starter in his prime.

How many bad goals have Smith, Koskinen, Talbot and Rittich let in the last few years?

I don't have all the data, but here's a excerpt from an Athletic article on goaltending analytics this summer:
Quote:
David Rittich was last in that category — 10 goals on 126 low-percentage shots.
|
Edit: Here's what the article has to say about Markstorm:
Quote:
Jacob Markstrom deserves a big payday.

He said that last year, Markstrom was the only goalie in the league that did not give up a bad goal - not one. He said that when a goalie gives up a bad goal (one that shouldn't have happened), and it isn't reciprocated at the other end, that team loses 87% of the time (which makes total sense).
|
This will be such a HUGE improvement over the last couple years and honestly must make a big difference in how the players in front of him treat the game. If our group responds in kind we should at least have a chance every game which is all you can really ask of a team.
Quote:
(Paraphrasing from memory) He was talking in the summer prior to free agency as well that they could plunk goalies into other teams data sets, and that Markstrom would have been even better with the Flames system and that Markstrom was the goalie best suited for the Flames style.
|
Lol this sounds promising too!
I was pretty dejected at the way last season went and how it ended. They get me every year, but I'm feeling cautiously optimistic like I haven't in a looong time.

Once Markstrom looked like he would hit the market he immediately jumped ahead of Taylor Hall as my top target for the Flames. I am sick of having average goaltending and looking forward to having an elite guy locked up long term.
I love what I hear about his desire and will to improve. This is a guy that wants to win and wants to get better. He also gets rave reviews as a teammate as well.

Plus, we could still get Hall as a rental assuming we stockpile some cap daily, dump a little bit, and overpay Buffalo to retain 50%....

My hot take for the season is that Markstrom will win the Vezina or be runner up. He just needs to shut out Toronto so people actually watch him play.

I said Markstrom was the best goalie in the NHL last season multiple times...long before I even had a sliver of hope of him coming to Calgary.
I feel like many around the NHL are just glossing over the biggest UFA signing of the offseason.

This year in particular will be very difficult for a western player to win many awards. He would have to be sporting some pretty gaudy numbers.

Wouldn’t it be easier as the Western Canadian teams get more exposure than ever in Toronto as they play each team 9-10 times? Feels like this season should be the most exposure the Flames/Canucks get out of the center of the universe since either team was in the Cup Finals

The top end of the north division is lower than the ones south of the border. On the other hand it has only one real doormat team, but it won't be crazy difficult to put up strong numbers against.
Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal each have the potential to have the wheels fall off given their question marks as well.
The top 2-3 could start to separate if that happens.

I’d toss Flames in as a team that could have the wheels fall off too.
Top line underperforms again (or doesn’t overperform depending how you look at it), Gio continues sliding, and Tanev isn’t a good Brodie replacement would put you guys fighting for a playoff spot.

Even if the top line plays as poorly as last year (unlikely, IMO), the Flames are deeper at forward, deeper on defense, and are significantly better in net.
I am a big Brodie fan, but what Tanev brings is more in line with what the Flames need. Gio had an off year last year, and it is unlikely that he is even worse than that this year. Andersson is blossoming into a star. Hanifin is 24 and is substantially better when playing with Andersson than he was with Hamonic. Valimaki is a strong add. And Nestorov pushes Kylington to #7. The D is better than last year.
Overall last year, everything went as poorly as it went well the year before. The most likely situation for this year is somewhere in between. And they have more talent on top of that.
The only real risk of the wheels falling off is if they are hit with significant injuries.

You realize Tanev is incredibly similar to Hamonic, but with less playing time and a better D partner, right?

I don’t know why it’s unlikely that the top line doesn’t get back to career numbers.
Tanev isn’t a Brodie replacement, he’s more a bit of an upgrade on Hamonic. Hanifin is what he is I’d think. I love seeing him and Andersson on vs Mcdavid. I think the defense is weaker by a lot.

They are similar except for the fact that Tanev is a better skater and a better first passer. I like Hamonic, and I hope for his sake that he rebounds this year, but last year, he was not an NHL defenseman. And that is hard for me to say.
I hope for his sake that after this season, you still feel they are 'incredibly similar'. But I doubt you will.
