Something that came up on 960, is that Erik Karlsson is only 27. I'm sure most here knew that, but for some reason that blew me away. It seems like he has been in the league forever! I would have guessed at least 3 years older than that. Brodie is actually older than Karlsson, I never would have guessed that...

Anyway, surprised me.

Very good deadline day. They didn’t give up any prospects. They added a solid, cheap and young RH C for almost nothing. They added a player who has had good seasons before for free.

Treliving says they looked at goal tending options and none made sense. No disrespect to Gillies or Rittich

Making a move just for the sake of making of a move is always a bad decision. I’m happy that they stood pat - there wasn’t a player that really stood out as an obvious fix for the gaps that the team has.

The price was going to be so high to get one of the higher end guys that it would have set the team back in the future if things didn’t pan out.

I don't like that they were even looking. It makes it sound like Smith is very iffy.

Although it isn’t clear exactly what Smith’s injury is (hip or groin), I think it is clear that Smith’s health is iffy - even if he comes back really soon, he could re-injure either of those injuries fairly easily. It makes sense to look for some options just in case.

This team, if it has a strong finish and makes it into the playoffs, could win a round or two - especially with strong goaltending if smith is healthy. It seems doubtful, without extraordinary luck, they could get by Winnipeg or say Nashville in a WCF. Or even if they made it past there beat a Tampa or Pittsburgh in a cup final. Keep building from within, deal from positions of strength at the draft (defense for forward), and see how it goes.

I thought for sure Detroit would trade Green (Salary Retained) to a playoff team that needed depth.

Full NTC and injury concerns made it a tough deal to pull off

Green wouldn't be the answer we thought he'd be providing anyway. Yeah he's another local guy but if we needed him here he'd have been brought in long ago.

Satisfied with the day. Got some depth guys in Stewart and Shore and only gave up a 7th next year. Shore is RFA and will probably replace Stajan next season. Will see how the rest of year plays out with Rittich and Gillies in goal not sure when or if Smith plays again this season. Stewart has scored some on the power play in his career will probably get look on it.

If picking up Stewart signals the death of the Brouwerplay, that alone is worth the price of admission.

Oh, I missed that he blocked a trade to Toronto. (Not sure how reliable that article is though.)

Well, only one team has an easier strength of schedule than the Flames to finish the season. Hopefully that helps.

Well, after this day I was excited because I was sure BT was going to make a move and trade some of our future away for a win now type of player but I am pleasantly surprised that didn't happen. I think BT did a great job by improving a problem we had (ie a terrible bottom 6) and upgraded our team without giving up assets. Great trade day for the Flames. Stay the course, keep the cupboards full of prospects and options. I love that he didn't go get a back up and trust Gillies and Rittich to lead the way while Smith is injured. Shows those guys that the team has confidence in them, which is a great pat on the back for those two. Great day.
