Find another goalie.

Do you like imagining worst case scenarios? Were you one of the ones crying about how Gaudreau was never going to sign here after leaving college? Do you wonder daily what the Flames will do when their young players go downhill and bust?

What do the Flames do if Rittich, Gillies and Parsons all become NHLers?

Parsons and Gillies are top prospects. Yes anyone can bust especially goalies. But wasting time imagining pessimistic hypotheticals is a sad way to spend your time and energy IMO

Cant believe how many deluded, overly optimistic homer fans have a crush on treliving the 'wizard' who signed gio for a decade, gave brouwer basically 5 million. Signed hiller johnson and elliott. 2 of 3 are castaway last chance saloon goalies. Johnson had 1 half decent year in buffalo as a backup who came in due to injury.

The amount of times this ownership and management group has sold the fans snake oil is incredible. At the ebd of every season we are 1 or 2 pieces away. Every summer those 1 or 2 pieces are terrible additions. We are always stretching to sign some loser who isnt wanted by 95% of the league.

How ####ing hard is it to acquire youngish pre-apex players. Versteeg Brouwer Elliott was our attempt at solving our problems last off season.

We are off to a good start now shipping out a top ncaa d man for a 60 year old below average goalie on a big contract. We just love a project player. The underdog.

#### it lets re-rebuild. Unless you really think this team can build a contender with half of our cap space committed to useless 30 something year old bums who have never won anything in their lives.

The problem here is the market. We as fans want a good team every year. We go through goalies coaches gms defencemen forwards etc like nothing else. We are opposed to silently sucking for 3 or 4 years and collecting assets.

Id rather finish last for 5 years and have a good team than finish 14th for the next decade and watch a group of b list nhlers pretending to earn their huge salaries.

If were going to suck...lets suck. Lets be a cap floor team with top 5 picks.

We suck...but we are almost at the cap for the next 5 years. Ironically this management group has no intellectual honesty. Putting a cheap low quality product on the ice and billing the team as a playoff contender.

The worst part about it is the homers with the rose tinted glasses. Oh but at least we have johnny. Oh remember how cheap we got Hamilton? Monahan is toews. Parsons will be our goalie of the future. Backlund > crosby because advanced stats. The coaching staff is awesome. Trust me brouwer will be great for us, hes huge, strong and scores goals. Elliott is actually the best goalie in the league in the past 5 years during the regular season according to these random stats!

Theyve already started putting their stupid spin on things...smith is just holding the fort for 2 years untill our 5 goalie prospects are ready. Earned not given. Hickey wouldnt have signed.

The problem is the market. Great passionate fans can be a blessing and a curse. A blessing becauae they support the team really well no matter what. A curse because they can be tricked by management every season into thinking this is the season they sneak in as an 8 seed and win the stanley cup with giordano brouwer and elliott/smith.

Look at most of the good teams in the league. They quietly sucked for about a decade. Hawks. Pens. Blues. Caps. Etc etc. Canadian markets ruin hockey teams. Every year is our year. Every coach has to be fired. Every young player is a bust who needs to be traded. There is no patience. No long term goal. Just a short term goal of selling season tickets and merch, varely making the playoffs and being swept in the first or second round by a much better team. RINSE. REPEAT.

yaaay. GO FLAMES GO.
.916 with ARI = better than avg (only a wee bit, but still...)

If BT thought he could sign Hickey there is no way he would have been traded.

Not only that but look at Fleury's numbers behind the best team in the NHL and then look at Smith's behind the worst team in the NHL and tell me with a straight face you honestly think MAF is the better goalie.

The way I see this Tre did well with what he had. Tried for Bishop but ultimately Bishop didn't want to be here (and I didn't really want him here either). MA Fleury was on the radar but he wants to go to Vegas. Tre had pending UFA Johnson, who was likely not part of the plans for next year and Hickey who was likely not going to sign with us. So in effect Smith was had for a conditional 2/3 pick and two assets that were about to expire. A bit high of a pick, but that extra cap room costs and will help us upgrade our #4 D, so worth it.

Is Smith better than Elliott? Probably, but not by a ton. Elliott would have cost a 3rd though and around the same salary but for longer.

This leaves us with a capable and slight upgrade for a #1, the ability to try a kid or two at Backup and ease them in and hopefully in 2 years one is ready to take over.

I get the lukewarm response cause this doesn't feel like a home run, but in context it's likely one of the best options we had available and the acquisition cost is manageable.

In Tre we (I) trust!

There is almost no chance Tyler Parsons is going to bust. You really need to do more homework on him if you think that is possible.

Let's be clear about something re: Hickey.

The story was that he wanted to finish college. It was never that he did not want to sign. There is a big difference.

That said, the Flames don't move him unless they believe that he's been passed by other prospects or that they believe there is a risk he won't sign next year.

They removed the risk and filled a hole. Smith wasn't my 1st Choice but I like this move due to the salary being retained.

Hell, sign Steve Mason and you're much better off, still for less money I'm sure.

This is stupid. That's the only word necessary to describe it.

I'm more than ok with this trade. Goalies coming from crap teams with ok numbers typically excel. Goalies coming from great defensive teams with all star numbers usually fall back down. One thing though with regards to Hickey, would the Flames not get compensation if he didn't sign? A pick in the round later than his draft round? Picked 4th? So they'd get a 5th? So essentially there's a 5th in there that should be accounted for.

A bonified starter... The 1a/1b thing wasn't working... There's nothing on the market... 4.5M isn't horrible... Only thing that concerns me is the injury history. Time for the stable of goaltenders to start pushing for a backup job. Smith will earn every penny with starts and the added pressure of being in a hockey market. At the best it could be a Dubnyk like situation... at the worst it will be a Hiller situation, which means it can't get worse than it already was. Flames need to get rid of Siglet though. Let's face it, it's not like we were going to get Price or anything, it's a stop-gap to having one of the young guys take the #1 job. It works.

Compensation is only for 1st rounders that don't sign. There is no compensation for picks from rounds 2 to 7.

No, you only get compensation for first round picks who don't sign.

If Jankowski hadn't signed, the Flames would have received compensation. For Hickey, they'd get nothing.

People keep saying "injury history"

What?

2011/12 - 67/82
2012/13 - 34/48
2013/14 - 62/82
2014/15 - 62/82
2015/16 - 32/82 (one injury season)
2016/17 - 55/82

Almost no chance an OHL goalie will bust??

I'm high on him, but with goaltenders, they are essentially always more likely to bust than succeed until they actually prove themselves in the NHL.

to be fair, when a player has completed three years of college and the NHL team is aggressively trying to sign you, then the decision to go back has to be a kind of a red flag for the team. I understand players like Gaudreau have finished their degree in the summer, so the decision to reject a contract will understandably raise some eyebrows within the organization. They probably got enough indication out of Hickeys camp that walking as a UFA was a real possibility and acted proactively here.

It sucks, I was really optimistic about Hickey. But with Kylington, Andersson and Fox in the fold, it's not the end of the world.

Sigalet will make sure Smith's numbers plummet. Basically a lateral move here.
