the reality is that the Star Wars franchise is such a massive brand and name that they were going to be given a long leash. It's almost an emotionally charged topic that fans of the original movies will come out to vehemently defend, and will lose their objectivity.
Nobody is saying it was bad, just that we had already seen this movie for the most part since 1977. Something new will occur in Episode 8 and I expect it will be the best movie to date for the franchise because it will finally be fresh but still properly capture the essence of Star Wars. I suspect they won't do a First Order Strikes Back because the criticism for this film will be that this was A New Hope 2.0, so they'll be forced to carve their own path. And the good news is that A Force Awakens has set things up nicely for a new story with some solid characters and good actors. Now just to execute.

But the next scene bothered me. Leia meets with Rey. But not with Chewbacca? The wife doesn't turn to her husbands best friend since even before they met...it just gets left out. There should have been an emotional pull by having them meet, perhaps even Chewbacca being subservient in sorrow to Leia. Then go to the Rey scene.

That's easily explained, women are bitches. Leia probably has long hated Chewie for occupying her husbands time. Instead of romantic wife / husband dates, Han probably went to chewie's house to watch football. Wives are like this, jealous as always. It's not about the dark side, it's just Leia being a typical wife and hating her husband s buddies who are constantly getting him in trouble.

Forgot I shouldn't post about a geek movie unless I've spent at least 15 hours already reading internet posts about said movie to become familiar with the current state of theory-wank.
Maybe instead you could think for second before clicking "Submit Reply" and wonder "Am I being a dick?", and then just click the back arrow.

Wow... a lot of those scenes SHOULD NOT have been deleted and would have helped tremendously in story telling. Both of the Leia ones, the lightsabre one... how they figured it's a better movie without these scenes doesn't add up, unless they thought it was too long? They mention flow, etc... but the republic stuff and Leia's thoughts on the First Order- that would have set things up so much nicer.
And Kylo Ren having a sad moment in the Millenium Falcon only would have added to the confusion of whether he was weak or not, would have helped there too. Also the part about Vader's redemption?? Why the hell did they cut that?
Well I guess that explains the lightsaber. I wish they would have kept the earlier scenes with the people from the planets that were destroyed, that whole part was a little lacklustre due to no real attachment to any of the people shown when the first order used the starkiller
from the looks of it they could have pretty much kept almost all of those scenes and not only would it have been fine, it would have been a better movie.
The floating light saber sounds very cool, but also very 2001-ish. Not sure if it was left out because of over concern it would be perceived as pretentious.
I disagree. Not all Jedi are part of this one family lineage. The family connection thing has already been done, can nobody think up a storyline that's intriguing that is not one of family lineage?
It would seem so easy, forced, predictable, re-hashed. I suspect they're going somewhere with that story, but IMO it would be disappointing. Make a new, interesting fresh story. Carve your own path. Otherwise- to be honest- we really have already seen these movies before.
Rey was a Jedi's kid, just not a Skywalker. In the flash back she was a kid as someone important to her was stabbed in the back by Kylo Ren. She was there at the Jedi temple when the Knights of Ren came and destroyed it all. So now I suspect she was taken away to be hidden from Snoke and Ren. And "sold" into the care of the tubby salvaged parts buyer.
Which also means, not twins. She's a few more than a few years younger than Ren.

The Republic stuff would have been nice for sure. As would have the lightsabre backstory and a little glimpse into Kylo's past, but I think they are wanting to save that exposition for the next film.
Everything else is 'meh'. I would have liked to see the Wookie arm tear, but he could have done that after Solo's death.
I know I'm inviting a big expanded universe explanation here, but what is the deal with Storm Troopers? So they started out as clones of one dude, but now obviously they are not. Did they find more than one source for genes, or are they now just normal people wearing the armour? When did this change happen?
I feel like this should at least have some explanation in the movies, as most people who watch just the movies may be wondering WTF is going on...or maybe it's just me...
