Jerome Boateng on being a Defender from the Players Tribune:

Quote:
Want to know the best way to figure out what a defender does? First, become a striker. Seriously. At least that’s the method that worked out best for me. Let’s call it a happy accident.

When I was 14, I played on the left wing for a Berlin youth team … Well, right up until our team showed up for a match in Sweden with our entire defensive line out with injuries.

“Okay, Jérôme, you’re playing defense,” my coach said.

Well no #### Jerome. That's how young players become defenders. No 8 or 10 year old starts playing football and wants to be a defender ... I remember when I started as a kid, we all wanted to be Cantona, Romario, Weah, Larsson or Baggio, not Cafu, Maldini or Matthäus. How fun that was when the coach told you "hmmmm ... you'll play as right back today!"

my two favorite stats this year

Barcelona are a 2nd half team. They lead the Liga by 9 points but if all games ended at halftime, they'd be 6 points back.

Bayern have a +45 goal difference. If they had let in every shot on target against them, they'd still be leading the league.

Well, on a positive note it seems like a stronger lineup against Augsburg for Liverpool, although it seems as though they're going to go with Lucas at CB.

Liverpool squeak through with a 1-0 win. Good defending over the tie gets the job done.

I cannot believe that with that defence we held Augsburg goalless over two legs. Well done to them.

Martial hurt in warmups, as if United's season could get any worse.

Well quickly back to even for United. 2-1 forces ET, 3-1 wins it. But that lineup is a mess so hard to imagine they won't concede another goal pursuing their own goals.

Its still do-able but they sure are enjoying making it hard on themselves.

I'm not surprised. The other keeper plays for a club that is named after strong password, this Danish club is built on strong defense.

That penalty was so bad you'd think Mata missed it on purpose to expedite Van Gaal's firing.

United lives again as Martial's sub Rashford (??) scores to even the tie.
