Brandon Sutter
Pittsburgh is stale and needs some change. Sutter, a second line centre on an average team, has an AAV of $3.3 million this season as a third-line centre in Pittsburgh, but is a UFA next summer.
As always, the Penguins need scoring wingers for Crosby and Malkin — and no, we are hearing Penguins don’t wish to insert Kessel into that spot.
How about RW Jiri Hudler in Calgary? We’d bet Flames GM Brad Treliving would put Sutter behind Sean Monahan up the middle, with Michael Backlund at No. 3. Both are UFA’s after next season, though Sutter is five years younger. Throw in a 2nd round draft pick going Pittsburgh’s way and that’s a deal that Calgary may favour.

I don't know how I'd feel about this if it happened.

I would feel pretty excited about it.
Drool worthy centre depth.

I wouldn't give an extra pick to the Pens. I'd want something in addition to Sutter.
I don't care that Hudler is 5 years older, he is a legit first line winger.

I would be not happy. We give up the better player plus a 2nd? That and I would rather turn the page on anything Sutter.

Yeah, drool worthy indeed. What I meant was outlined below by Caged. Hudler is older sure, and winger vs. center etc.....still, I'd hate being the team adding to that deal.

Good C depth, but our RW position would be in shambles. Unless we had another deal in place for TJ Oshie or someone, no thanks. Especially wouldn't add a 2nd to Hudler for Sutter who is meh.

I think we can do better than Sutter for Hudler. Adding a 2nd is out of the question.

it's a lot easier to move prospects or young players who are centers to the wing than vice versa

Bryan Murray just said that his goalie trade will happen soon and that it will NOT be a satisfactory deal for Ottawa. He said he was expecting more from the market and that the trade Ottawa makes will not meet his expectations.

I wouldn't like it. Bennett needs to be playing center next season. Sutter is a nice player but we don't need him. Hudler should only be traded for a premium, and Sutter is far from it. We're adding a second as well? Forget about it.

Yeah, and I don't know if a 2nd is going to happen like Spector seems to.
I think the trump here though is if you think you can sign Sutter for a reasonable rate due to the location. If he is a typical Sutter and wants to play near home, maybe you can get him for a modest raise. He has relatively modest stats.
I don't know if it's Hudler straight up or what. My preference would be to turn Hudler into another couple of 2nd round picks this year or next and something that rhymes with Shmeesmenshmen.

I think I'd rather just trade Hudler for picks/prospects than for Sutter.
We already have Backlund as our defense-oriented pivot. Sutter has just seems to disappoint me wherever he goes.
Or we could just keep Hudler. The wing is where we are weak.

I agree that we need wings more than centers at this point. Also, is Sutter even any better than Backlund?

1. Injuries: Injuries happen. Even with Giordano's catastrophic injury, Calgary was pretty fortunate last year that no one else in the top 4 lost time to injury. Knock on wood, Calgary is healthy up front next year, but, I don't know if you want Bennett on full time top 6 centre duty next year, at least not without an alternative. Sutter adds size to the team that they lack in the middle six position.
2. Even without injuries, rolling with Bennett getting sheltered centre minutes in his first season and having Backlund and Sutter there to help shoulder the load will help Monahan and Bennett have more productive seasons. If you can re-sign Sutter for a decent rate, and Bennett steps up the way Monahan has, then Backlund becomes expendable with Sutter sliding effortlessly back into that #3 slot.
I think it makes all the sense in the world, but I'm not sold on the cost.

If Sutter is behind Monahan at 2 and Backlund is at 3, that means Bennett is at 4? Garbage.
And how old is that post? Backlund is extended.
I look at these talking heads like a fishing lure, some of them are using the right bait and hooking us real good, but then you get clowns like this guy who throw out a pop can and tell you its a minnow.

More likely that Backlund or Bennett would slide over to the wing.

If we are trading Hudler it better be for a young 2nd pairing defenceman. Otherwise you'd have to blow my socks off for me to get on board. Sutter does not cut it and certainly not the overpayment that Treliving is looking for.
