Haven't read any Canucks forums yet, what is their plan for him? Is he going straight to Utica or is he heading to Vancouver?

I think Utica this year and reunited with his old coach Green.
Next year they have to have him slotted on the 2nd line I think.

What? A second for a guy who will probably be a career AHLer and wasn't going to re-sign here is awesome.
Seriously some people need to get over the Baertschi love. Burke called him out and was brutally honest. Nothing Burke said was wrong. In fact, I thought it was a nice change of pace to hear someone tell it like it is when it comes to Baertschi.

He's guaranteed a roster spot with the big club next year or they lose him to the waiver wire

If you believe treliving, and no other team was offering anything even close to a 2nd, I'd say that's another home run.
For me, it's equally as surprising as the Berra return. Never would have called that. Especially given the return for guys like Shore and Colborne.

Going to Utica but some fans at HF are pencilling him in for 2nd line duty next year. I guess it's possible.

I'm just glad they didn't pull an Oilers and gift-wrap him a roster spot because of his threat.
It was bad enough that they called him up a few times based on pedigree instead of merit.

Not sure what Burke has to do with this.
If you are talking about when he said Sven needed to learn the 200' game to become an NHLer...he was right.
Past that, it isnt Burke that has held him back nor is it Burke who was unable to make the team despite multiple oppotunities since, nor is it Burke that said Sven wouldnt be back with Calgary....thats ALL on Baertschi.
Makes the return for him far from "that blows".

This is all a bunch of crap that he wasn't given a chance, he simply didn't earn his spot in the NHL for the Calgary Flames. Not that he couldn't have but he made the decision that it wouldn't happen here. Guess what, he is now gone and I am happy to have a 2nd round pick this year that will likely be very happy to be a Calgary Flame. No room here for guys who are entitled.
|
Let's face it, new management didn't like Sven and Sven didn't do himself any favours. Some guys need a kick in the pants. Some guys need positive encouragement. It appears like Sven is the type who needs positive encouragement. I was just listening to Benning's press conference and just remembered that one of Sven's junior league coach is coaching the Canucks AHL team so they obviously see a guy who needs a change of scenery and can be molded into a more complete player.
Anyways, the team got a 2nd round pick for him, which is all you can ask for.

The writing was on the wall for quite some time now. I don't understand how this move comes as such a huge shock to a number of fans.
It's very clear Burke was not a huge fan of Baertschi's... And on the flip side, it's pretty obvious Sven wasn't happy with his treatment by the Flames organization. He hasn't earned top 6 minutes with the big club and he doesn't play the style of game that is conducive to a bottom six role.
If he flat out told the Flames he would not be re-signing which is what they were reporting on the fan960 earlier or he requested a trade, Treliving absolutely made the best decision.
I for one am thrilled with the fact we are entering the draft with six picks in the first 90 of a supposed deep draft. We are in year two of a rebuild and need to stay the course, especially now that we've lost our captain and best player for the remainder of the season.

If any other team was offering even close to a 2nd you wouldn't move him in the division.

When Savard was traded away for a jug of cold spit, he already had over 300 NHL games under his belt and had scored more than 200 points. He had also proved that he could be a #1 C – not as good as he became later on, but serviceable. Baertschi hasn't even proved that he can be a regular player on an NHL roster.

Man people do your research before making yourself look like an ass. I was a long time Sven guy, but he had an attitude problem. His agent came out and said he wasn't signing in Calgary when his deal was up. Where there's smoke, there's fire. There have been rumblings of his attitude and general unhappiness with the way management handled him. Furthermore, he was waiver eligible next year, so we'd lose him for nothing. Do you think he would have been a regular on the big club next year? Please.
Finally, trading a NON-NHLer for a 2nd rounder is a good deal any day.
The ONLY bad part of this trade is that it was with the Canucks. I liked Sven and I'm sad that he didn't pan out. But this his problem.
PS: I also think it is pretty cool that the site crashed when the trade broke. It shows how passionate the fan base is. A guy who isn't even on the big club gets traded and the site explodes. That is kinda cool to me.

Does go to show that prospects are all mostly fool's gold until they actually make the NHL as a full time player. Erixon and Baertschi were both rated by THN as top 15 prospects outside of the NHL at one time. Like everyone I get excited about the draft picks and the guys in the AHL but it all means nothing if they can't play in the NHL.

No reason not to believe him as I am sure he was biting his tongue the whole trade call....he knows who this teams biggest rival is.

People talking about a deep draft - is that consensus? My understanding was that the top 20 or so picks are above average quality this year, and there are a couple of potentially generational talents at the very top, but that late first round and afterwards it drops off pretty significantly.

ya I find predicting stuff like that is kind of futile
a lot of people said last year the Sedins were done, now they are back in the top 20 in scoring
if 4 years ago someone said Edmonton would have 4 more bottom 5 finishes in the next 5 years few would have believed it etc
things change, some prospects fail, others exceed expectations
