My guess is Ward would've earned some of that salary by playing here and the Flames wouldve given up a player or two as well.
Riberio, I hope, would've been a pure buyout.

Nope, doesn't sound like extortion.
Extortion - the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.

@RealKyper: Hearing Cammalleri turned down significant offer from #Flames. Teams that are looking for scorers include #Ducks #Pens and #Devils

If I HAD to sign a FA I think at this point I'd be looking at a winger or a young(ish)top 2 dman (or a goalie?).
Stastny would be intriguing, but where does he slot in 4-5 years from now? He's not signing a 3 year deal, so look further down the road at the roster. Would you want a 7 million dollar (best guess) guy playing on the 3rd line? That ties up future space you're going to need to fill holes around Monahan and Bennett.
Vanek scares me. I get the feeling that he would disappear under Hartley.
This year (IMO) we should be hitting the floor (no more) without signing garbage long term deals. Start sniffing out FA's 2 years from now when our roster matures, and we start making runs in the playoffs. That's the time you load up the roster, not now.

Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Thomas Vanek enjoyed his meeting with Wild coach Mike Yeo late Sunday, and the feeling was said to be mutual. The Wild made Vanek’s short list, but agent Steve Bartlett said there were other good options on it too. The Wild had more conversations Monday with Jarome Iginla’s reps in hopes of selling Iginla on its program and how it’s a Stanley Cup contender. One player who would love Vanek to sign with the Wild is his former Sabres linemate Jason Pominville.

If the Flames sign anyone to more than a 4-year deal this off-season I will declare it dumb idea. Overpay to get the term down, fine, but nothing longer than 4-years.

They did?
I thought Ribeiro wouldn't waive his NTC so the talks stopped.
If they did agree let's make more deals with Maliney as he is obviously temporarily insane or just an idiot.

The "significant offer" scares me. Cammi is going to test ufa , but he still might take "significant offer" if the money and term is not available with other clubs.

@RogMillions: @reporterchris says #Flames have significant interest in Goaltender Jonas Hiller.

Thank goodness Cammy's leaving. That being said I wonder what the Flames are going to do to replace those goals?

I wouldn't mind it if the Flames took on chance on Hiller.

The problem is if Cammy leaves, we may overpay Plan B, C, or D just to reach the floor.
Vrbata, Kulemin, Setoguchi. The drop off is significant.

FFS Flames, take the offer off the table and target someone else. He doesn't want to be here, that showed with his piss poor play up until the trade deadline and then his impressive play after it. Get rid and find someone who is willing to come and work for the whole season.

Steinberg has said many times that he believes the Flames will reach the floor through trade and not free agency.

Anyone know if the Free Agent Frenzy coverage for TSN will be switched onto TSN from TSN2?

Meh. He only scored when he panicked about his market value

Add Mason Raymond into that list too. He can score and I feel he'd actually be a great fit with Monahan.
