I dunno, I say some pretty unpopular things on here
But I think criticizing the suspects fathers gut wrenching speech is in bad taste.
Let's move the conversation along to other things.....

It generally refers to a premeditated crime, something done with some thought as to how to do it and some follow through.
It's opposite is a "crime of passion" in which someone acts because their emotions are so high they aren't in control of themselves.
Generally, if people are "hot headed" or "hot blooded" they do things without thinking, especially of the consequences. If you do something in cold blood, you are well aware of the consequences, but choose to do the action anyhow.

PR campaign by the defence? This is a murder, not an election, nor an episode of Law & Order.

I should have been a lot more specific in my comment, as I intended to reference the thought process in the immediate aftermath of the murders. Over time, many do find a level of peace and/or forgiveness, yes.

Read in a couple of places that de Grood may have not even known the people he killed. If true, I don't even know what to say his actions make no sense.

Almost like he's ill, mentally.

From all of the articles I've read about this, one contained an opinion from a mental health expert that "there's always a reason" but that reason does not have to be tied to the people killed. Something going wrong in the person's life can be taken out on others even though they have nothing to do with the perpetrator's problems-- but there is a reason.
I think its natural to search for a reason-- someone doesn't just snap and stab 5 people to death for no reason, right? I think it would disturb me more if the reason is not tied to something those 5 had to do with his perceived issues.
All we can do is sit back and see where the investigation leads. In the mean time, I consider the perpetrator's parents victims in this as well. They seem like upstanding people. The father's statement rang true to me. Making such a statement is better than staying silent.

Someone started a thread for that purpose, although it doesn't seem as popular:
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=136680
Feel free to post those things in this thread though, but the running topic is about a brutal mass murder, so there are bound to be some unpleasant angles posted here as well.

99% of people who were going to offer such condolences did so in this thread shortly after the incident, then it moved on to what it is today. If there were two threads from the beginning, you'd see hundreds of posts in that thread.

Watching that father almost had me in tears. I have really tried to avoid this thread because I knew it would get ridiculous. Some people need to realize this is a tragedy for all involved including the young man who did this. There is nothing to indicate this kid is a sadistic psychopath who decided to carry out an urge, something mentally has snapped inside. There is a very strong chance this kid does not even remember doing it. If I remember correctly the murder weapon was just left at the scene, you don't do do that if you have any concious thought of your actions. So my sympathy's go out to this young man too who probably does not remember doing this and is now left without a future, and huge amounts of grief and fear. Mental health issues are tough and they can come on fast or go undiagnosed so easily. I have been to suicides where the family cannot believe their loved one would do such a thing because there was nothing wrong, or so they thought. I know mentally ill people here in my city that can't remember what they did an hour ago but can remember what they did last week on Tuesday at 9:38 pm on the nose. We have one lady that lives on the street (nicknamed Crazy Mary) that pushes her belongings around in a grocery cart and sometimes is as sweet as pie and other times has no idea where she is, where she was, or even who the hell she is. On nights when I work I can always find her in this walkdown to a store that is not in use and I bring her a box of the old doughnuts that Tim Horton's is going to toss and sometimes she is very thankful and sometimes she swears at me. I feel bad for all involved in this, everybody is a victim here. Some people should not be saying the things they said if they don't understand mental health.

He did bring a weapon with him though (from work), which shows that there was some planning involved, and this was not necessarily a spur of the moment incident. Although he didn't even use that weapon, so that's kind of strange.
Although surely his educational background in psychology will play a significant role in this. I am not saying he's not mentally ill, as he probably is; but depending on what he learned in University he could have tried to stage certain factors knowing what the prosecution would be looking for.
