A great feeling.
I had a big lump taken out of my arm earlier this year.
This conversation happened during surgery.
Dr: "wow, hey insert nurse's name come take a look at this"
Nurse: "errrrr, what is that?
Dr: "Yeah no idea"
Nurse: "weird, I've never seen anything like that"
Dr: "me either, gonna definitely have this looked at"
Anyway turned out to not be cancerous, but phuck me that was a long few weeks waiting for the call.

It sure is! We first went through it 6 years ago when I was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and still every 6 months when I have follow up MRIs. Everything can be going great, but the 2 weeks between having the scan and getting the results are nerve wracking.

Had my early ultrasound today to make sure it's really a baby and not another molar pregnancy and we have confirmed it is really a baby! I cried tears of joy. Such relief.

I've been meaning to post this for a couple weeks now. I finally accomplished something that I thought would never happen and it made me very happy!
I am a big trivia nerd. I love Jeopardy! most of all but really like pretty much any trivia ever. About 8 years ago a met a co-worker with a similar interest and we started going to a weekly trivia night. It was only the two of us but we managed to hold our own. We even came close to winning a big prize once but I choked on a geography question getting Christmas Island and Easter Island confused.
The team grew and evolved over time with co-workers changing and eventually meeting my wife who introduced me to new trivia loving friends. We had fun and were competitive but never won. At one point we even managed to complete a full 10 game trivia season. This included a few 2nd place finishes which cumulated in a 2nd place overall season finish (you may start to see a pattern). From here we made the finals for the big overall prize and you may have guessed it we finished 2nd after I choked again getting the flags of Iceland and Norway confused.
After that the team started to drift apart with all of us moving around and becoming parents. The trivia night went from every week to a couple times a year but similar patterns were emerging. We were finishing in 2nd place every time! After about 4 of these finishes it started to become a running joke. There was even one game where we tied for first but lost on the tie breakers because we thought we were out of it and jokingly answered '69'. I was starting to accept that the meaning of my life was to always finish 2nd best at trivia.
Then it happened. It was a normal trivia night with a normal team of 6. We got off to a slow start, including another dumb mistake by me answering Luxembourg instead of the Netherlands, but managed to recover getting all the bonus questions and finishing with a score of 93/100. This was a quality score but we were confident at least one team would have beaten it. Then the quiz master came over and asked us a tie breaker question. Wow, we must be tied for first, is this finally happening? The question was "what year did Newton Heath FC change their name to Manchester United?". I told off my teammate who wanted to answer 1969 and put in an answer of 1924. I really had no clue it was just a guess. Then came the moment of truth. The other team answered 1878. The answer was 1902. We won by 2!!! Yay!!!

An old friend is visiting town with his girlfriend. We are going out for a drink. They are my kind of people, and when I am with them I feel like the richest man in the world.

Are you just abducting some vagrants and rubbing their noses into how much better your life is than theirs?
Because I can see how that would 'really make you happy' but in the grand cosmic scheme of things, its not very nice.

Someone earlier today called me out for messaging like a character from Dickens , so maybe that is exactly what I am doing, recreating great expectations.

yesterday we had my son's preschool christmas 'concert'... that's not what made me happy - it was kinda painful actually - ha ha!
wrmmh was afterwards there were snacks and stuff and one of the moms came over and started chatting with my wife and i. she mentioned that her husband and i know each other. i was like 'whaaaaa?' where was he? she pointed him out and i'm drawing a total blank. she then tells me his name and then in my mind i'm thinking 'really??' we were friends in high school and haven't seen each other/kept in contact since grad (so almost 30 years). he no longer wears glasses, grew probably 3" and has put on i'd guess 65-75lbs... so it's kind of understandable that i didn't recognize him.
he came over and we started chatted for probably 30 minutes and it was like we hadn't missed a beat - it was awesome. we exchanged contact info will be getting together in january to do an evening of catching up.
it was great to get reacquainted with an old friend and to see that he and his family are doing well!

Christmas Eve afternoon I was looking at the CBC As It Happens facebook site, reading about The Shepherd (the show plays this story on the Christmas Eve show or the one closest to it). I'd mentioned that the show inspired me to make a diorama of the story years ago, and a bunch of other listeners responded asking for photos (the FN site won't allow uploading of photos). This morning I
got a message from AIH wanting some photos. They posted this a few hours ago:
