My 11 year old nephew plays these games. I was leery about it when he was over on the weekend so I texted my sister and she was gone with the violence and swearing, just didn't want him to see any of the sex parts.

I feel for your kid trout..........if I was in his shoes I'd be a little miffed as well. I hated when my friends got to do or see things when I was about that age and my parents wouldn't let me. When you're that age you're just ticked off at your parents when they stop you from doing something and you think they're just don't understand or just don't care. But now as a parent I guess I understand it a bit better. Even if he's not doing missions there's pretty mature comment everywhere in the game. I guess you could let him borrow it and watch with him as he plays it for a few minutes and then you can both see what it involves and discuss why it isn't suited for kids his age. Because we all know eventually he'll just play it without you knowing somewhere else. Maybe if you both see it and discuss it he'll understand where you're coming from. I don't know, just throwing ideas out there.

I keep the game in my room , my 14 year old plays it with me when allowed. I even sat through awkwardly watching him get a lap dance
His friends have the game. I'd rather him not think I don't know this stuff exists

Has anyone tried the online modes? What kind of stuff is included?
Hopefully it adds more hours of fun to the game.

I thought about this scenario in particular. Whenever my wife and I have talked about a game or movie that might be inappropriate, the agreement was that I'd watch or play with him/them. So many times while playing this game I find myself unable to fathom how you could comfortably sit next to your kid and do some of these things.

So far we've only got to the strippers. I have to say, he probably enjoys it less too. Lol
My issue is at his age, he and his friends have cell phones with data, ps3s have browsers and they have unlimited access to porn, movies and the like. I watch him, but I have no other control when I can't. The right thing in my mind is censorship still at his age. Unfortunately, it's not at all even slightly possible, so I feel if I provide it's place in adult society at least I'll have a chance to steer his moral compass

So far I've only been able to get online to create a character and watch the intro clip. It starts to load the first race but freezes before it starts. These are the issues Rockstar is working on right now.
http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/...cles/200426246
Quote:
- Occasional "Rockstar Cloud Servers Unavailable" error message
- Freezing sometimes while loading into first race in GTAO with "waiting for other players" on the screen
- Intermittent "Failed to Host a GTA Online Session" error messages
- Race Corona (start area, marker) occasionally not showing up for first race
- Errors saying "Timed out when matchmaking for a compatible GTA Online Session to join"
- Occasional errors about jobs failing to start or load
- General issues with the Social Club site and Social Club features (slow loading, failed logins, emails not arriving, etc). For more information on Social Club status, please see: http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/...cles/200357093
- Misc. network and server-related error messages, disconnections, or cloud server errors
- Errors saying "Mission Failed" as soon as the mission begins during a session

I finally got a copy. So much fun. I got beat up trying to go to the strip club. I had some other lol moments.
Quick question. Do I have to pass a mission before I can skydive?

I don't have kids, but after thinking about it the last couple days I think this is the approach I would take, as uncomfortable as it might be. He's going to be able to see any part of the game he wants on Youtube, play it at his friends houses, and talk about it at school and on the internet. At least with you there for some of it, you'll have a chance to talk about stuff with him.
I totally agree with what KKF, Russic and Igottago said earlier about the content being very inappropriate for young kids, but preventing him from any exposure to it will be impossible.
Edit: Have you talked to any of his friend's parents to see what their rules about it are? Maybe it's actually Dad playing it in the other room and sometimes little Billy gets to come in and fly the plane around a bit...

Not sure, I didn't try to break into the airport that early. Give it a try with a fast car and book it to a plane. You're gonna suck at flying though, cuz flying school won't be unlocked. There's definitely a learning curve.
Also the problem is, parachutes won't be unlocked at Ammunation yet. Hell I'm halfway through the game and they're still locked. But if you take the gondola to the top of Mount Chiliad, there's one at the gondola exit...but Chiliad is almost the other side of the map from the airport.
...so basically, you prob could, but it's gonna be a process.

Yeah I can imagine the transition from total censorship to trust is tough. I think the approach of being there for questionable stuff is great, ideally you want the kid to be able to mentally handle it and not let it impact their morals before they get flooded with it. How to treat women would be a great one, something like GTAV just continues all kinds of bad things in society.
When I was 14 one of the friends swiping a porno mag for everyone to look at was common, but that's pretty limited compared to the flood of porn that is incredibly explicit and a good portion of it treats women like garbage.
It's not impossible to control though, something like OpenDNS you can put on all the devices and either have control (and be able to tell if they've changed it), or at least have some reporting. Depending on age you can either filter (I use it to filter youtube on my kid's computer and devices), or just track.. Or some combination, I'd eventually like to give my kid more access.
Plus it can block a lot of really bad stuff that you wouldn't even know about.

OpenDNS won't prevent what they see on their cell phones and many other parents don't care much, so I only control my house. I still remember at his friends 8th birthday party his friend got an Eminem CD...from his parents

I agree. I guess it's one of the tough parts about being a parent of kids around that age group.........you don't want to be naive enough to think they don't have access to a whole host of inappropriate things whenever they feel like it, at the same time you can't just throw your hands up in the air and let them do whatever they want. My kids aren't at that age yet, and I'm already kind of dreading it. I just want to communicate with them as much as possible.

Thanks for the info. Kind of what I assumed. I was going to drive to Mt Chiliad but realized it would take a while. I'll wait till I unlock flight school.

Depends on the cell phone, some I think you can even override the carrier DNS (though that might have unintended bad consequences).
Barring that for Android phones there's probably a lot of different options, but as you say that only covers so many situations.. other parents are ignorant or don't care.
Used to be the answer to that was then the kid just doesn't get to be friends with that kid, but nowadays seems like the parents who don't care vastly outnumber those who do.

Take a taxi to the cable car station below Mt. Chiliad. Once you take the car up the mountain there should be a parachute waiting where you exit the cars.
Then spend the next hour BASE jumping and driving the dirt bikes off cliffs and pulling your chute!

You're still his dad though and are the ultimate example. I wouldnt let my 12 year old play the game.
That gta is a depressing satire on our culture is lost on the multitudes that play it.
As long as the kid has his ultimate authority figures explaining that to him, he will be far better off than his peers, and hopefully setting an example on that behalf.
Explaining why its wrong or unpleasant or multifaceted will always satiate the curious mind better than shrouding it in mystery.
