You have to balance that against not earning a reputation for being someone other GMs can force into taking their price and only their price.

I think they might have put too much focus on an extension being part of it though.
Just auction him off for one full season at 50% retention and you would have still got a good return

Just get a 2nd and a 3rd for him and cut the last tie to the Flames playoff implosion against the Oilerz.

After ekblad signed with Florida I figured Anderson would have been the number 1 target for a bunch of teams needing D. Guess not.

My read on the situation (and we're all just guessing) is that Andersson isn't as valued as many on here think, and Conroy has really only had 2 or 3 teams seriously interested due to those being the only teams that Andersson will sign with. The well has dried up without a deal.
Now we play him this season, hope he plays injury free and puts up good numbers and simply trade him as a rental before or at the deadline with full retention. Hope for a first and some middling prospect and move on.

Poor in a stat like +/-.
In goals scored he matched his personal best.
He also had a career best 140 shots blocked.
He played 81 games with an average of 23:59 minutes TOI, with a broken bone through a portion of that season.
Other teams will value him for being the kind of guy who can play top pair minutes with an unproven partner after the GM essentially guts the D core out of the team. Other GMs will understand the bigger picture of what Conroy has done to the Flames and adjust their ... expectations in more realistic ways than most fans.
Also, what alternatives are there? The good D UFAs are not available until 2027 (if they even go to market). Karlsson might be available but he is 7 years older, much more expensive, and not as good defensively as Andersson. Otherwise, there isn't really another RD available but there are a bunch of teams looking for a legitimate top 4 RD.
My read on the situation is that it is the middle of summer. The well has dried up because there is no new news. Conroy has set his price and is comfortable waiting for a GM to step up and be serious about trade talks. The fans are ready to cave in way faster than the GM because they want to push that controller button and see the transaction go through immediately.

Re signing Andersson would be a disaster. I would be more open to it if we did not have Weegar.

As I’ve said before, I think Andersson is the type to decline steadily and rapidly going into his 30’s…

Any idea what's the hold up with the Zary contract? Every media guy that's connected to the team was speculating it's going to end in a bridge deal because Zary is the type of player to bet on himself. At the same time, I doubt there's that much of a difference between $3M and $3.5M.
Which leads me to believe the sticking point is the term. Does the Zary camp want a 1-year term, while the Flames want more? Or is a long term contract for slightly less than Coronato is still a possibility?

That's the thing. To the common eyeballs (us fans), it's either Rasmus or Weegar. Parekh is going to be a staple in the top 4 almost immediately. Any trepidation other fans have about that statement are just being cautious. I expect that guy to Dustin Wolf his first season.

Happy to hear! As much fun as it is putting him in a hypothetical trade, I enjoy watching him play for the Flames. I'm not concerned about his injuries, if anything he seems resilient.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago, but this is pretty standard when you look at RFA's across the league,. The fans panic when any semi decent/good RFA isn't signed by August and start writing doom fan fiction about trading them away or turning on them "well then he can just ****ing sit if he doesn't want to sign before camp!!!".
And then 99% of them sign in the mid August to early September time frame and all hysteria dies suddenly, lol.

I thought Bingo and others that were good with stats showed that Andersson can play top pairing if he's the weaker link, but gets caved if he's the stronger one. But can carry a second line pairing with an unproven D-man, to a degree. He seems to shine brightest when he's on the second pairing with another strong second paring D-man.

Agreed. Would like Zary to be a long term part of this team. Hoping he develops into a solid 2nd line player (ideally a centre).

Yeah he's a 2/3 IMO.
If you have a strong LH top pairing dman he can play with him on the top pair, or he can anchor your 2nd pairing on the right side.
But if he's your #1 you're probably not a contender.
