If it does play out this way and players want out, I only hope we do go this route. 2023 should be a pretty amazing draft, and we certainly have a lot of players that we could capitalize on in trades.

…I just really hope they don’t pivot and spend money in free agency. Building your team through paying mid-tier talent free agent dollars is a sure fire way to never compete for the Cup.

This was always going to come down to the legal tampering window and the deadline to sign 8 years. this happens every year in all sports with major free agents.

I have little doubt he gets $11MM plus on the open market and that's the basis of the ask from the Gaudreau camp. Not much motivation for them to come down from that number so I don't see this as a meet in the middle kind of situation.
I have always considered the addition of the last year at about half AAV about equal.

So, 7 years at $12M ($84M) should be equal to about 8 years at $11.25M (90M).

This is based on a guess that in that 8th year Johnny should be able to get about $6M.

I choose to remain cautiously optimistic about Gaudreau/Tkachuk until it is confirmed otherwise. We know this is how the agent plays it out so the Flames likely need to increase their offer by tomorrow to try and close the deal. I do believe Johnny is prepared to walk if it comes down to it but I also believe he wants to stay.

I am not really sure about Tkachuk but I don’t see him doing the QO to free agency. I think he hopes to secure a long term deal either here or elsewhere but he will want to cash in after a 104pt season when it makes sense. it is a gamble to take a 1 year deal after a career season and it makes more sense to lock in while he can.

I am looking forward to resolution on this hopefully we get some good news today or tomorrow

I’m optimistic about it. I think if he intended to leave the Flames would have known and been acting accordingly earlier. It’s just about bargaining right now.

I also think it’s not as easy as just agreeing on a total number and term. How much is paid out when, what years are bigger and why, signing bonus, ntc, etc are all big parts too that can take a long time to negotiate.

There is no legal tampering window.

Is there not a date where teams can start talking to players a few days before free agency? i thought that was a thing. Maybe it is just the NFL I am thinking of

Edit: Looks like it was a thing but now it is gone. Well, this stuff still happens, even if not legal haha

There were a number of people that thought that was a probability. Jersey admits there was a deal on the table and it fell apart at the last minute. This was close to happening, but the failure to get the Gaudreau contract done prevented it from coming to fruition. This may be one of those deals that doesn't happen that the team looks back on and regrets they didn't pull the trigger.

Yeah and I’m not sure he would get $12M x 7 to be honest.

I think the Panarin deal would be the best comparable and that is ~$82M over 7 years.

I still think that $84M ($10.5M) to $86M ($10.75M) over 8 will get this done if the Flames move there before the 10PM MT deadline tomorrow night.

Flames are going to take this to the wire because really the are negotiating two contracts here. Whatever Gaudreau signs for directly impacts the Tkachuk negotiations too.

I still think he signs and still hope he signs, but I also don't want the Flames to just write him a blank cheque. Looking down the list of top paid players in the league, the teams with players right at the top are either ones I don't really see as favouritea, or ones where those players reached that level after winning cups. Tampa doesn't have a player on there until rank 17. Colorado doesn't have one until rank 25.

What’s keeping my hopes alive is Gross has done this before, taking things to the last minute.

I also keep thinking about what Gaudreau has said publicly on more than one occasion about staying. He didn’t have to say those things. I’m not sure if he has said this but we also keep hearing about what a tight team this is and the guys really like each other (granted many teams say this).

So if he were to leave, that would be as an about face turn around as I can recall. Probably not unprecedented, but, man, will he have ever screwed the Flames around.

Don’t believe they did, and don’t believe it actually was. Jersey mentioned discussion around the 2nd overall, but nothing to do with the Flames.

Tkachuk will receive a qualifying offer. That is an automatic. It is what happens in the next 48 hours that will determine the course of things when it comes to Tkachuk's future with the club.

I have not seen this? Where has Jersey admitted that there was a deal for Tkachuk on the table?

Why would any GM draft a player at 2nd overall and then come out the next day and say “oh yeah we had a trade in place with that pick to get Matthew Tkachuk, but it fell through last minute because they don’t know what’s happening with Johnny Gaudreau”?

The Calgary Flames: totally okay with spending $5.25M on a 4th line LW, $6.375M on a centre who can’t play defence, and nearly $6M on their bottom pairing - but refusing to pay elite talent what they deserve.

IIRC they interviewed Fitzgerald right after the pick (2nd overall) was made and he was asked if he came close to trading the pick and he said that they had come close.

He didn't say with what team or which player(s) or if there was any more to the deal.

I heard the rumors but never saw anything from anyone of legitimacy that there was a deal or one was close etc. Not saying that wasn't the case, just never saw it so didn't chalk it up to anything more than speculation.
