It's the best public access course in Calgary without question.

Played Crowsnest this weekend. I've said it before but this is one great course. It can go up a giant any mountain/resort course.
Only issue was after a 10 minute frost delay, which was fine, we teed off 30 minutes late at 8:30 due to the group 3 ahead taking 45 minutes to play 1 and 2. One of guys was wearing, essentially, work boots. Marshall got them sped up and made them skip a few holes.
The Marshall was then apologetic the rest of the round but it took 4 hours 45 minutes which is way too slow but it was still a great day with buddies.

I played a 5.5 hour round at Kananaskis this weekend. It was a beautiful night, but it was hard to be focused with that. The group ahead of us had five people (!) and I have no idea why they allowed this. I know that’s the issue with courses like Kananaskis, but it was pretty ridiculous.

That's stupid.
Courses need to do a better job enforcing pace of play and not overbooking just for the $.
RCMP are investigating a fight at Riverway in Burnaby this Saturday after a group shot into the group ahead and things got ugly. Apparently it was quite bad.

I thought they had Marshall's to force the pace of play.

That's why, when I eventually buy into a club, it's private only for me. Imagine dropping $25k and $6k a year to be behind some weekend warrior group of 5 and suffer through a 5 hour round. Gross.

the marshalls were all over them. First they showed up 10 minutes late for their tee time (and by rights, their day ought to have ended there), but they were just plain brutal. I do get it; people need to play to learn to play golf and I don't really like rushing people. But that was just egregious.

I'm playing my 3rd round in 5 days today, all not at my club.
You're right, but sometimes you still do it to play with certain family/friends. Morning or weekday rounds are generally ok; 4.5 hours or so.

I've come into a small amount of money and figured I'd buy something for myself, so I think I'm going to get a whole new set of clubs. Someone recommended Modern Golf to purchase and get fitted - anyone been there and can offer an opinion? Other recommendations?
Not sure if budget matters, but I was looking to spend around $2,000 - $2,500 for the full set (except putter).

To me it makes a difference if we're talking about it rolling up on you, or coming in on the fly. Honestly, rolling up and getting close isn't a big deal. I'm not saying that I'd be fine with it happening multiple times, but if it happened once and the guy acknowledged it, I wouldn't care. If it's coming in on the fly though, you could kill or badly injure someone. I've had that several times and it's ridiculous.

Could they have hit you with any pace, i.e., hurt you? If the ball carries to where you area that's no bueno, but in fairness, sometimes people just hit the shot of their lives and they feel absolutely terrible about it. I recently hit a 3 hybrid about 30 yards longer than my usual "well struck" distance and it rolled onto the green while the group ahead was putting out - I meant it to be a layup. Felt terrible.
For me, if it's the first time, and they yell fore, it's fine. If it's the first time and they don't yell fore, the response is to tell them, "YELL FORE! YOU ALMOST HIT ME!"
If it's the second time and they've yelled fore each time, tee their ball up in the fairway and leave it. They'll get the message. If it's the second time and they don't yell fore, you can either go give them a talking to or just take their ball and do as you will with it.
If it's the third time you have no choice. You have to kill them. It's unfortunate, but it's self defence at that point.

Yeah I’ve had it roll up on me which is no big deal. This was the first time I’ve actually had one come at me in the air. 5 feet to the left and he would’ve hit me right in the back of the head. I was pretty pissed off about it, but they suddenly managed to take their time after that one and avoid walking anywhere close to our group.

We had a 14 some in a recent afternoon on a guys trip in BC.
We had the course to ourselves though so no one else was affected.
3-4 guys teeing off at once...It was a sight to see...
Yes...many many cold beverages were involved.

I think Modern Golf would be good for a fitting. Looks like they have a promo on right now too. Although maybe that doesnt matter if they apply the cost of the fitting against your purchase of new clubs.
I do wonder however if your budget is enough for a full set. You can surely do it based on prior gen equipment but not sure how much of that will be available to you through Modern?
New drivers are 8 or 900 now. Irons 1700+. Wedges a couple hundred each. Then a fairway wood / hybrid.
Its been a while since I really shopped for new equipment so I am curious as to how you make out! Keep us posted.
Another consideration - you can get a free custom fitting at golftown and if you have clubs to trade in, they have a 50% trade in bonus until July 10.

Thanks for the info - I was a bit worried my budget might be too low, but I can't justify paying more than that given the quality of my current set. Never thought about a trade-in, but that could maybe help close the gap for me? I'll have to check it out.

And sorry, I am not 100% sure it is too low. And you can absolutely put a set together for what you are looking to spend. I just don't know if you will have access to that at Modern (do they only fit for the current generation of clubs?)
I just played around on the GolfTown website and you can definitely put together a set of Driver-Fwy-Hybrid-Irons-Wedges(3) in the 2500-3000 range. That would not be current generation stuff, but still excellent equipment. And obviously if you have anything to trade in you can lower the price or upgrade some of your selections.
