I actually don't think it's a certainty that Tkachuk thinks signing the QO is a better play than doing a multi-year deal with the Flames. He had a phenomenal year last season and while good players tend to bet on themselves, he may want to cash in on the year he had as its not guaranteed he'll repeat it this coming year.

Tkachuks bear play is a 4 year, 35-40M deal. Set for life and ready to cash in for a 7-8 year deal in his prime. Also allows him to cash in immediately following escrow...

I was told today the current positions are:

11.5 from Johnny
10.0 from the Flames -- offer given directly to Johnny by Murray Edwards yesterday. Not sure if this means that they went over Tre's head or if it was more of a "this is how important you are" type thing.

Ball is currently in Johnny's court.

Also there are some people that indicated they will want out if Johnny leaves the team. Not much of a surprise there.

If that is true, JG walks. That is a pretty big gap and some teams will offer $11.5 million on a 7 year deal. The difference on money for an 8th year $10 million won’t matter. Add tax differences and the fact he will likely get another contract after 7 years, an 8 year deal at $10 million AAV just is not worth it for JG.

Pretty indicative on what the direction of the Flames should be. If Johnny is gone, you may as well rebuild. Simple as that. This organization could use one, especially if our star winger departs.

lol @ the Flames if they don’t go above $10M and lose Johnny because of it.

Team is totally fine overpaying James Neal/Milan Lucic, but refuse to pay elite talent what they’re worth.

They’ll pay market value for 2nd and 3rd line forwards, but not elite talent?

Yikes. Flames better up that offer, or it’s rebuild time because the team without Johnny (+ the others that want out of Johnny leaves) is nowhere near Championship quality.
