Dogs don’t have more rights than people. Dogs do not have the right to die. You have the right to kill your dog, you don’t have the right to kill your family member. Your dog does not have the right to choose death or not choose death. You have th right to choose not to die and in many circumstances can choose to die.
Mental health reasons for maid is a really challanging area and I think it’s reasonable to be cautious. We have a government that does not support health care, lack of access to health care leads people to choose MAID. The other unfortunate option is when mentally ill people want to kill themselves they are often successful without help. So for me redirecting to treatment seems like the correct approach.
Now making a law against advanced directives is just cruel. If I get diagnosed with dementia I am immediately moving to a location which advanced directives. The end of life of memory care patients is tragic. To outlaw a humane solution is cruel.

Officially in Canada no, Quebec though allows for them since 2024, the federal government is planning on introducing legislation at some point and Alberta is introducing legislation to pre-emptively ban.

As it is, it is too hard to qualify for MAID for many people that need it most. Not many are competent when the time comes to make the decision.

This was the experience for my mother. I know that when she was competent she wouldn't have chosen MAID, and that idea would be too hard for her to contemplate. But, when things went downhill for her, I have no doubt that she would've wanted MAID if she had been able to make that decision.
I don't know what the solution is there. It might be more humane, but at the same time you have people who would try to take advantage of this, if it were too readily available.

Yup. The quagmire makes people die too soon. I could have said 'wait stop' and she would gave, but it was her choice an no one elses but I let someone die when they did not really need too at that time. F capncer. She beat you too it. Haha.
It doesn't deserve to be spelt right.

What I don’t understand is why you can’t pre approve your power of attorney to make the decision or list deceases you would want Maid to be enacted when you are competent

Which is what you already do with a DNR (do not resuscitate) isn’t it?

New rule is you are scheduled to die within 12 months anyway before you can use MAID.

So whybdoes a family member now have to be a witness to a MAID application?
And just what constitutes a family member?

The same people that come up with hilarious (!) nicknames like that aren't going to take any other NDP candidate seriously either.
