As a team in the East, they shouldn't worry about what Edmonton did to CGY in that series. That was ugly as hell. But if their goal is to get into the playoffs or win a round or 2, then Markstrom is easily the way to go given what's out there.

A fully retained Markstrom, worth a top ten pick. That's incredible value for a 3m goalie who can earn you the wins to get you into the show. Especially if the Flames take back salary too.

Edit: with all that being said, ask me if I thought the Flames should pay that kind of price if they were in NJs shoes or Ottawa's. I'd say no.

Actually, I'd probably do it if I was Ottawa, they need a bump, badly.

Marleau trade off the top of my head. Although the cap is way less tight now

The Maple Leafs paid a 1st round pick for the Canes to take on 6 million in cap space. Seems like the going rate for one year of 6 million.

The price was set by Dubas when he paid a 1st (Seth Jarvis) to dump the final year and $6.25M of Marleau

I think Ottawa has spent too many futures on DeBrincat and Chychrun

They have 8 picks in the first five rounds this year plus 4 picks in the first three rounds next year. They have more than enough assets coming and already in the fold to make a move.

Yeah, but they already bled high picks and have nothing to show for it and will need to forfeit another 1st round pick in 25 or 26. I could see them trading the Boston 1st for Markstrom

I’m still told a deal in principle has been made.
NJD definitely didn’t care what Markstroms numbers were against the oilers. His advanced metrics have him as the best goalie available and someone they can count on to help them push for a cup in the next 2 years.

Trying to find out why no announcement(s) but nothing yet on timeline.

Have to think NJ wants to wait and see if there's a faller they love at 10? (if that pick is even involved)

I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think the holdup is moving parts, more so just a timeline to formally announce. I’m led to believe the picks in play either way.

Maybe we need to market watch CGY homes recently for sale

I have a very good source that also said a deal in principle was made not long after the trade deadline.

Some combo of markstrom, 10, 28 is probably involved. Excited to see the final return!

If they're moving 10th overall to CGY in a Markstrom package, I'm curious to see how the remaining parts of the deal balance out.

What are the extra pieces going to NJ? What else is coming with 10th overall from NJ?

I'm a believer that 50 percent retention on Marky alone nets you 10th Overall. If Fitzgerald is using it to grab a FW too is it Mang or Pospisil?

I'm okay with that too. Do we get Holtz as well in a bigger package?

So many questions.

It'll be nice to see or hear the return eventually.

I wonder if the hold up could be that they are waiting for a 3rd team to have cap space or a retention spot open up on July 1st. Just spit balling.

I don’t believe that is an issue, since the players have all been paid for the season already.

Doubtful. If the pick is from this draft then July 1st would kill that deal. The pick would be kicked another year down the road.
