Usually a Stanley Cup winning team is a perfect build. No bad trades, no bad hires, and decent drafting. Then it takes good depth and luck to get one cup out of it all. And then once the team gets a championship, they contend for a few years but usually not enough to win it again. And then they rebuild once the chase is hopeless..
I'm not sure the Flames have been perfect.
Now it's possible they can still be playoff contenders but winning a championship is hard. Very hard! And we've seen that the Flames have struggled at the GM position since Sutter with imperfections.
I think the fact that the Flames have a terrible goalie coach, a very inconsistent special teams coach, and a poor head coach, the odds of a championship is stacking against them during this build. Given that this roster is a product of all mentioned managers, I think there's been too many mistakes over the years to honestly believe the Flames have made all the right moves during this rebuild

I think peaking early and management overvaluing the team they had also plays a factor. Like Colorado. And every rebuild has ups and downs. I don't think you can say every team has to be perfect to win a cup. That's just a bit naive. I'd say the next draft is essential for this team and how our prospects develop over the next 2. This rebuild started off hot and is cooling down now, we nab a player who develops into a great player in the next draft and your tune changes. It all will depend on how the Flames draft and their ability to get picks for their veteran players. Continuing to build for the future is what this team needs to do, we are not going to be contenders any time soon. Versteeg would be my first to get traded, along with Ferland, Bouma, and Brouwer (if teams want him). Wideman has no value, at least I don't see it
Lol, It's pretty funny going back and looking at all the posts calling for GG head and blaming Treliving for this 'mess'. Special shout out to the classless morons that resorted to the childish name calling they spewed through different threads.
I encourage people to search for 'glue gun' and remember the posters that used it. Don't bother replying to their posts in the future. This board would be much better off and infinitely more readable for it
oops

Our coaching staff needs to go - Gulutzan, Cameron, Gerrard, Gelinas, Sigalet....clean the house.
Flames need to hire an experienced head coach like McLellan, Boudreau in past years....Claude Julien could be the guy....maybe even Gallant.....
The team also needs to blow up their defence. Gio/Brodie/Hamilton/Wideman/Jokipakka/Engelland is going nowhere.
Gio needs to go. Wideman will be UFA. Same with Engelland I believe....and a new D-core needs to be built around Brodie and Giordano.
Our D is heavily overrated and thats part of a huge problem. There's constant blown coverages in our own zone.
1.
2. Brodie
3.
4. Hamilton
5.
6.
That is what our defence depth should look like. The fact is that the Flames don't have a true #1 dman....and its not like they grow on trees but every contender has one...just a thought....unless your entire top 4 is pure quality.
Guys like Bouma, Stajan, Ferland have no place on this team. Bouma/Ferland are always injured and arent really that solid defensively either. Stajan is well....Stajan....
That's my version of a championship team....so many holes to fill....this team is nowhere close to competing. With a lot of cap space coming off this summer, the onus is on management to take massive strides and do whatever necessary to fill as many holes as possible.

Yeah, the Brouwer signing is really looking bad on Treliving now.
Brouwer is actually not far off his career norms for scoring, so we're getting pretty much what we should have expected. Would be interesting to see what he could do on Johnny's right wing instead of the offensive black hole Chiasson is. Probably not much better, but it is clear that Gulutzan needs to stop running Alex out in a top role.
It's nice to see all the chicken littles having to eat crow.
First, it means the Flames are playing well and winning, and secondly maybe...just maybe they'll be less annoying and more patient the next time the Flames fall into a bit of a funk.

Just goes to show how the ebs and flow of the season dictate the narrative. Our patience is being tested once again.
Patience is key when one wants to avoid coming down with a bad case of "chicken little-itis"
Especially during a rebuild with a young core and a brand new coach/system.

We just beat a 2 time cup winner with a highly sought after goalie.
Also made points in 6 straight with this team some are suggesting to blow up . I'll reserve judgment until the 2nd round as I think we make the playoffs and get into the 1st round which we win.
I've lowered my expectations 30% and so they are exactly where they would be and I'm happy.
Team is confident. Healthy. We should surprise some people this year.

Pleasantly surprised that the Flames seem to have found a way to maintain consistency. They've evolved into a different team that's tougher and more resilient in just a months time.
This thread is just a big emotional roller coaster ride. Full of highs and lows.
Mostly lows.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
