Yeah, why add D or goaltending when you can have a bunch of soft, one-dimensional forwards?

Are you suggesting Edmonton not select McDavid but rather pick a d-man or goaltender with this first?

No, he's suggesting MacTavish do what any smart GM in his position would do.
Trade a couple of those overrated proven losers up front and get some D/G.

By all accounts, McDavid is much more of a focussed, self-starter than the other top picks the Oilers have ruined. He won't need a coach to explain how to read the game and to back check. In fact, I worry that his nose-to-the-grindstone professionalism might start to rub off on the other young Oilers. The other alternative is that McDavid's nose-to-the-grindstone professionalism, and intolerance of the bone-headed selfishness of the other young Oilers, will cause a rift in the team. Actually, I'm pretty sure the latter eventuality is more likely, and will be a lot of fun to watch.

Eberle/Hall are likely somewhere playing XBox to see how many points they can get with McDavid.
RNH somewhere else crying on the phone to his mom because they didn't invite him.

Edmonton would be smart to trade some of their "elite" forward assets (minimum one center, one winger) for an elite defensemen.
Connor McDavid improves them immediately and significantly, but that team has been BAD for years. They desperately need one elite veteran defender.
I really hope they do not augment their D corps all that much this offseason. As potentially dangerous as they will be to score at any moment, they will still be terribly susceptible to goals against. And I'm okay with that.

It's the same reaction around the entire league.
You expect it to be different with their arch rivals? LOL.

And the Flames went to 2.
The reason Calgary got as good as they did....is because of the Oilers. I have no problem with divisional rivals being good....gives the club a goal of getting to those levels. The late 80's being the best this team ever was...period, was also IMO the best time to be a fan.
Sure it sucked seeing Edm win those championships, but it was the impetus that drove Fletcher and Johnson/Crisp to improve. Calgary has a few parts to build on now themselves, regardless of McDavid or anyone else on that team. It bothers me not a bit that they have a bunch of young "hype" guys now as only 2 of those are really worth the status so many seem to be anointing on them.
If they ever figure things out up there, then the Flames will just have to have an answer themselves...and there is nothing to say they won't or can't. It would renew a very much dead rivalry as well. Win win.

No. I am suggesting they not blindly commit to holding the homogenous "assets" that they have pitifully assembled.

The oilers stink. They may have a ton of superstar players but so did that angers team with lindros and bure or that age team it's kariya and selane. Neither team won then just like the oilers won't win now. They need to change but they refuse to so they'll stay the same. I'm not worried about the oilers getting good because they have another skilled young player, I'm worried about the league missing out because the oilers got another skilled young player.

They really don't have a ton of superstar players though.
Taylor Hall is the only one I'd even consider in the conversation.

The league flipped the bird at the Flames ...?
Forgive my ignorance but how did they do that?

McDavid isn't the same as their other picks. He is elite in every sense of the word, especially his drive and will to win. He is a proven champion and proven winner, he won't be part of the Golden Boys clique going out to Oil City Rigs after a loss to chat up girls. McDavid is gonna be watching tape and sharpening knives looking at the logos of 29 other teams.
Someone said earlier they expect a rift in the young guy crew and I expect that as well, McDavid isn't going to put up losing and being satisfied with losing. He'll be the captain of that team in two years.
The only silver lining for Flames fans is that, for the first time in my entire life, it looks like both teams are trending up at the same time and the rivalry I've only ever heard of will be back. Our guys are going to have to go through a good team to reach the pinnacle anyway, might as well be the Oilers instead of the Ducks

Meh, the lottery flipped the bird at every other team not named the Oilers. You just happened to respond to a post from a Flames fan on a Flames message board. I'm pretty sure there one exact post on every other teams fan message board.
This should be expected.

OVER IT... well not really, but okay..
We got Mony. Bennett. Johnny. ..Gio. Plus we still bolster one of the most impressive prospect bases.
We aren't done, Edmonchuk, so you better build perfectly.. cause we gonna make you "own" that dynasty tag. Every step, every play.. every second.
Love you Connor.. but keep yur head up.
