I think the WHL went crazy here. A slap on the wrist and maybe a fine would be more than acceptable.

Ryan Culkin registered his 19th assist of the season today, meaning he ties his last year's assist total after 25 games - he needed 60 games last season to do it.
Coda Gordon also has an assist so far.

Was a bad move by Portland but the penalties far out do the crime.
It's not like they were giving money to players. From what i was told they gave flights to parents that did not have the income to see their child play. Yes it is an error, but it seems excessive.
I guess you could consider training in the off season as giving money to a player.

The WHL should show some leniency to Portland but make it clear to every team in the league that it will not be so lenient in the future (unless it wants to reevaluate its stance on player benefits).

Why should Portland get a free pass this time and teams in the future get nailed? I'm sure Portland knew what they were getting into.
Good for WHL with throwing book at them.

The player who was signed in 2009 was likely Nino Niederreiter. It wouldn't surprise me if Sven was offered a similar deal.

Baertschi says he never got a flight from the winterhawks
http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/11/29...ls-winterhawks
Quote:
Yeah, Sven Baertschi’s parents once accepted a free flight across the Atlantic Ocean to watch their son skate in the Western Hockey League.
Thing is, the Portland Winterhawks had nothing to do with it.
Baertschi, widely considered the Calgary Flames’ most exciting prospect in recent memory, paid the bill himself.
“My parents only came over once and I paid fully for that. I was able to pay for it because I was already signed with the Flames,” said Baertschi, whose family lives in Switzerland. “In Portland, I got treated the exact same way as anybody else on the team.”

I know it is early days regarding the young defensemen we have in the system, and stats are a poor way of gauging how a defenseman is doing, but what are the opinions on our defensemen? Sieloff I believe has a number of fans on this board, as does Culkin, but does anyone have an idea how the group of them rates compared to previous years, or other NHL teams systems?

Another loss for Ortio's HIFK, 4-2. They brought in two new Perreaults for tonight's game but it wasn't enough. I assume a third Perreault is in the mail as we speak.
Ortio with 38 saves and 3 goals against (fourth one was EN), the opposing goalie Tarkki with 13 saves. I wonder how long before the coach gets fired.
According to the starting lineups, Granlund played on the second line with Mathieu Perreault. No points.

I was hoping to see some brilliance from Scheifele last night with Barrie in to play the Spits. He had 20 goals in 25 games, coming into last night. I thought he would light the Spits up, but he was very quiet, got an empty net at the end of the game.
Sieloff was just okay last night, the Spits had a great third period but couldn't pull one out, lost 4-2.
So frustrating to watch them some nights, last night they were terrible on a 6 on 4, trying to pull out that tying goal. Fans certainly got spoiled during the Hall, Ellis, Henrique, Wellwood years.

Should really be a new thread on this, but short answer to your question is compared to other NHL teams, the Flames D prospects as a group are probably considered below average (perhaps average depending on how optimistic you are).
With all due respect to the current group, the Flames are in serious need of top end talent in terms of D prospects.

Besides, nothing really important, but Sven Bärtschi is nominated as "Newcomer of the year" at the Swiss Sports Awards. Three sportsmen stand for choice, Bärtschis competitors are the football player Granit Xhaka and the biathlete Benjamin Weger.
I hope Bärtschi wins, even if its absolutely irrelevant, as he is the best athlete of them. But I think people will vote for Xhaka as he plays in the Bundesliga and already plays regularly for the national team with 20 years of age. Plus, Bärtschi is far away in North America and you hear absolutely nothing about him in the media. The lockout isn't doing him any favours.

Creds to poster on HF.
Interesting stuff, probably not that significant in terms of awards but I'm sure Baertschi is happy to see some recognition from his home country.

Sieloff made a great play on a 2 on 1 to block the shot, got the puck up to a forward for a breakaway, he was tripped up and given a penalty shot. The forward did not score.

Sieloff has to have 5 or 6 blocked shots this game.

Can't wait to see the hightlights, but Gaudreau had his stick tied up or something, and kicked the puck to Mullane who scored. BC down 2-1 in the 2nd

2-1 Providence after 2. Gilles with 20 saves. Janks with zeros.
2-1 Near the end of the second for BU over BC. Gaudreau just made "some-kinda-pass" with his right skate to kick it to Mullane for the BC goal. He extends his season long point streak.
