So just wondering, I'm on Bell. B^^*ched enough politely that they gave me lots of credit on the early upgrade fee at retentions. I was chatting over the phone as to if there were going to be more costs (as the CSR gave me a heads up) at the Chinook Bell Store. Honestly, she couldn't give me a straight answer if they would charge me an activation fee. Now, wouldn't that upgrade fee be included. What do they consider activation? Putting in my SIM card?
Any heads up would be great, thanks!

A interesting technical article about the A6 core. Apple isn't just about industrial design and software.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/09...rformancewatt/
Quote:
Apple may finally be reaping the benefits of its acquisitions of chip designers PA Semi and Intrinsity with the iPhone 5, according to sources speaking to AnandTech. The A6 processor that powers Apple's newest iPhone is using neither rehashed Cortex A9 cores, nor the upcoming Cortex A15, but an original design based on ARM's armv7s architecture. Along with the move to a 32nm process and the power efficient design that PA Semi and Intrinsity engineers are known for, Apple's bespoke design appears to deliver double the performance of the A5 used in the iPhone 4S, at about the same, or even slightly less, power draw.

Quote:
It's clear that Apple is no mere integrator of off-the-shelf parts. The path from using bog-standard ARM systems-on-a-chip to a fully custom design as been four years in the making, and I look forward to seeing where Apple will take this approach in the future.

Anyone who ordered an unlocked model have any idea how to get a sim before friday? It'd be nice to avoid the chaos of having to go down to the apple store to pick one up.

Apple Store might give you one Thursday....
else go to your carrier location on Thursday, they will have em in by then. They'll charge 10$ though. (or w/e your carrier charges for sim cards)

Bell should have a waived activation fee going on but only for new consumers. Only thing you would benefit from is the unlimited long distance promo. An activation is basically when start a new term whether it's a new contract, renewal or month to month.

I'm going to buy the unlocked iPhone to use when I travel and am wondering if this will affect my monthly cost. Do I pay any less per month for the unlocked phone for the same plan as for a locked phone?

Not directly, but it does give some leverage against the phone company to get your rates lowered (or extra stuff added for no cost). Since every 'sale' that comes up, you can point out to them how much money a month you could save by going to XYZ provider with no penalty.

I'm getting an unlocked iPhone, which will allow me to go without a data plan. I rarely use my data plan, because I work at home. I figure without data, I will have the phone paid off in 1.5 years.

Hm, good idea perhaps. I cancelled my data plan on my old iPhone a year ago when my contract was up because I use my iPad and wasn't using data on the phone at all. I'll think about that.

This is what I'm thinking too.
I believe Bell will give you 10% off your bill if you bring your own phone ( http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Promotio..._to_Bell_Offer).
Not sure if anyone else would do this.

If you cancel your data plan make sure you get your data locked and get the name of the person you talked to and the time and date. hahaha.

How much farther up from 'top of the heap' can they reasonably be expected to go?

If you're not actually going to use data, why don't you just buy an iPod touch and a flip phone that's free? It seems like you're wasting your money buying a phone when you don't want the capabilities of the phone. You want an iPod.

Because then he'd have two devices instead of one. And he wouldn't be cool. I like the idea of an unlocked iPhone with no data plan and an iPad with the $15/month data plan.

What was your waitlist # when you last had one? Rogers' preorders are apparently shipping already, but I think you're supposed to get a notification.
Or maybe they haven't figured out your new waitlist # yet. =P

I text a lot, plus I use dell voice, as well as strava gps and music for jogging. I travel to the states a lot, and roaming has cost me big bucks. Also, I use my phone as a camera. The iPhone has one of the best cameras. Just makes sense to have an all in one device.

So why not get a data plan? 60 bucks a month gets you 6GB which should be more than you'd ever need. And I have to imagine whoever you're with has a decent roaming plan to the states.
It weirds me out when people spend 800 bucks on something and then cheap out like this... People who complain about the cost of 1.99 apps are in a similar category, although there's a little more financial justification here.
EDIT: I'm aware my issues with this make me a crazy person.
