I agree with you on that...but I had an iPad before and typing on that was ridiculous in comparison. I kind of wish it was 1/2" shorter just for typing though.

Good deal for a great tablet. I bought the 16GB version a month ago with full intent on rooting and hacking a new ROM onto it, but I like it just the way it is, so I haven't done anything but use stock ROM and no root.

I must've missed that deal. No worries though as I"ve had it for several months now. Going to upgrade to the Prime as soon as Canada gets some Champagne Gold ones.

Loving the playbook. It's awesome. It'll be better when there are a few more apps on there.

How is the app marketplace for it right now? To be honest, I can't imagine that it will get love with the poor sales numbers, at least through official channels.

I wonder if the fact that is sounds like a lot of people have now purchased a Playbook at these basement prices, if that might convince at least some app makers create some content.

It won't be the first platform they might consider, but if a lot of people now have a Playbook and the app store is relatively empty then it may be easier to compete with a few thousand other apps than millions apps.

If it's anything like the WP7 platform, they'll be paying developers to port their apps over to Playbook. There isn't enough money to be made for someone like Rovio to port Angry Birds over to Playbook.

Probably a bigger percentage of revenues than other developers get for their apps.

RIM has stated that they will offer financial incentives to developers to bring over their apps to Playbook. Those incentives are only available to the bigger developers.

I kinda got the feeling that was the entire reason for the incredible price drop, wasn't it? Get a ton of units out there so developers have a reason to make apps for it.

That's certainly why I bought mine when they first went on sale. There's been a few bigger games and apps released since then, which is great to see, but hopefully there's a lot more soon. I hope they sold an absolute boatload of these so things improve, it really is a slick little unit.

Also, the lack of app problem on PlayBook is also due to the available SDK. Right now, if you want to make an app with a built-in UI, you have to use Adobe Air SDK or HTML5 webwork. So you have to use ActionScript or HTML 5 but support for those SDK sucks.

They've showed off an app built using cascades during the DevCon and it looks really nice. Hopefully they can release that cascades framework to the developers soon so you don't have to use Flash or HTML5.

Price chopping continues:

I'm kinda confused why all the various models are the SAME price, but hey, when they have to be sold . . .

Just another glaring example of bad decision making from RIM. "Hmm we need to do some price slashing here to get these in the hands of customers. Let's slash all three models by $300. Let's run this plan by the committee" 3 hours later you end up with a 16gb model selling for the same as a 64gb model.

Am I the only one that just thinks RIM wants to sell the 64GBs? They've probably got loads of them.

I would guess that they have loads of all of their models . . . but relatively speaking, you might be right in terms of 16 vs 32 vs 64.

Anybody have the HP tablet, they had a fire sale for those at like $99. There have to be a ton out there; what is the app market there? That would probably be a good indication of where the future of the playbook is going.

The difference is rim just got the clue they needed to firesale these in order to get more people to buy them while hp just murdered the tablet of and i believe stoped supporting it all together. What i think rim is doing is selling them at a discount and releasing another one in three months and have android 4.0 support for the new ones while giving these ones 2.3 support.

How does that make any sense though? RIM users aren't the same as Apple users. They won't upgrade just because there's a new one. Especially if it's only in 3 months.

RIM is putting out another tablet? Where did you see this - I haven't been keeping up with them to be honest these days.

I am assuming that they are losing (a lot of) money selling their existing tablet at these prices. Demand has been terrible so far; I'm not sure that it would make sense as a business to sink even more money into that market for them. That being said, who knows that those two nutbar CEO's will do . . .

I have seen nor heard anything about another RIM tablet. RIM is a few nails away from a funeral.

My guess is that they are trying to build up their user base so they can attract more app development, as that is where they are truly way behind the competition.

Maybe they are now selling them somewhere close to their cost just to get some cash flow going. Selling them at a small loss is better than them taking up warehouse space.

My guess is they are well and truly screwed. Once they get Android support passably working, there will be exactly zero incentive to ever develop native Playbook apps. The market will be happy to deliver shovelware for the platform that kinda works on the Playbook, but mostly works better and faster on true Android native tablets, and then the choice for consumers between the Playbook and those true Android tablets will be clear.

Even more to the point, the huge advantage that Android and iOS have at this point is that those platforms support handsets and tablets. What app developer wants to target the Playbook and not the handsets - the ones running QNX are about a year out now, per RIM. Tablets are still a small part of the mobility segment, dwarfed by phones. The Playbook is like a niche (QNX based) within a niche (tablets vs handsets)
