Don't forget about this site... it has great information and needs support.

http://openmedia.ca/blog/angels-telus-dont-be-evil

It costs these companies $.02 per GB according to one study (source same site). So charge me for my usage go for it, but do it with a 30% markup, not a 100,000%+ markup. No company makes that profit in a competitive market, that's gouging and hardly representative of a free market. It's collaboration pure and simple.

Well I am pretty sure they did.

Well if they did, I haven't heard anything about it yet. Their website still says high speed is 60 gigs.

Mind you, maybe they did and just haven't officially announced it yet, I don't know. If they did, that'd be a welcome surprise.

Oh, if you are on regular high speed, then no increase. Extreme and better plans got all the improvements. For $10 bucks a month, if bandwidth is an issue, then perhaps you should consider upgrading.

100GB for extreme is an upgrade? I thought it used to be 125?

It was 125.

Then they dropped it to 100 while at the same time announcing that they would begin billing for going over the limit. All a month after Netflix became a big deal in Canada.

Shaw got cocky and thought they could get away with treating their customers like dirt.

Extreme got a speed increase recently, but the cap remains unchanged at 100.

Just verified that as well, was misinformed earlier.

I have been experiencing similar speeds. I have seen it get up to 20 occasionally, and about 2.2 download. This is with a new modem as my last one was giving me 7 or 8 down and 0.2 (yes - 0.2) Mbps upload. Determined it was on the fritz, and it was.

It fixed the upload, but download is still at the old levels even though I have definitely been "upgraded". 15 is plenty for me, and I am benefiting from the increased upload quite a bit, but I may call them again and see if it should be better. After all, they are advertising 25 now.

Is anyone seeing speeds consistently in the 20-25 Mbps range for Extreme?

Hmm, they're having some promo $29.95 per month for Shaw Extreme for the first 6 months. Might switch to it from my current High Speed connection. I guess 100 gigs is all I would need anyways, so might as well pay an extra $10 per month and not worry about going over this stupid cap.

ah well i've never even sniffed 20 so that's probably why the shaw csr kept asking me to try doing different things

Recently I've seen download speeds of 22 Mbit/s with a Saskatoon server on speedtest.net, but I've never seen anything close to the purported upload speed of 2+ Mbits/s. I'm still stuck with around 0.8-0.9, which makes me wonder if I haven't been upgraded yet and the high download speed are just their "burst technology".

Out of nowhere my internet connection went dead. Getting a wireless connection was gone, pages would not load. So I called shaw, after holding for 30 plus minutes, I got a CSR we ran speed tests. I got 10 mbps, 6 and then 5 through a direct connection. Upload was good at 2 steady. He put me on hold, and I was a disconnected, after another 35 minute wait and call back, I got a new CSR we did the same. Then he reset the modem, and then said he will send over a tech.

2 days after, the tech comes over. I will give him credit, one of the better ones who has ever serviced anything Telus or Shaw. He seemed kind of confused as to why it was so slow as well, and it didn't help that when I run a speed test on Shaw website it says I have warp, but my service plan says extreme. After this confusion was resolved, and it was determined I have extreme and don't need a warp modem, he began to change cables, change the ends. Still nothing, then he went outside checked everything still the same. He finally changed the modem and bam, I am getting 20 plus mbps now

Now I am trying to figure out if my linksys router is a piece of crap, because the amount of random drops gets frustrating. I am thinking of airport extreme, but I am not sure if its worth it, and if it will boost my wireless speeds.

Testing today, I've been getting a consistent average of about 9MBS down, 2.3 up.

I have the Extreme plan and judging from the upload speed it would appear I have received the upgrade.

Guess it's just network congestion bringing my DL speed down. Still fast enough for everything I do, but just barely.

Try changing the channel on your router from 'Auto' to channel 2 or 10. This solves the problem you are having 95% of the time.

I have a question for the people here smarter than me about this (which would be almost all). How much bandwidth is used hosting a minecraft server.

Checking my usage on Shaw shows about 100GB. We (4 in my family) surf the net and play xbox 360 but really don't download much in the way of movies etc.

My son has set up a server which he and two friends will play minecraft on and so I wonder how much band width it would be/could be using.

Thanks in advance
