That's been required in Canada since 2022. So it will just take time for the older vehicles to slowly die off.

Agreed. Contributing factor is dash lights come on when DRL's are on. If they did not it would be an additional clue (when it was dark outside) that your headlights were not on. Dash not lit - headlights not on.
Not sure if it's a wives tale but I've been told one of the reasons against full time headlights when the ignition was on was US military bases influenced this. When approaching the entry gate they wanted vehicles to be able to turn lights off and not blind the guards. Who knows.
I had to laugh. I was on Stoney a few weeks ago at night. Dude in front of us is riding the a$$ or a struggler in front of them who also happened not have their headlights on. And the guy was flashing his lights and generally trying to tell this guys his lights in a pretty aggressive manner. And the idiot did not have his his lights on either.........

I'm with UCB...all lights on whenever your car is on, but with the option to turn them off (say if you're parked in front of a store or house and want to turn them off), then they pop back on next time you put it in reverse or drive.

Missed opportunity to just make it automatic - if you are moving, your front and rear lights are on.

As of September 2021 the Canadian Vehicle Lighting Regulation will require that all new vehicles sold in Canada have one of the following:
- tail lights that come on automatically with daytime running lights
- headlights, tail lights, and side marker lights that turn on automatically in the dark
- a dashboard that stays dark to alert the driver to turn on the lights
This standard will apply to all new vehicles (cars, trucks, SUVs, 3-wheeled vehicles, motorcycles and heavy trucks).

So good news for strugglers (and those behind them) at night, but not so much in other forms of low visibility.

Oh well! Look at this guy! We know who is in the pocket of 'Big Battery' and Alternator Manufacturers! Just using power all willy nilly!
You're in bed with Elon aren't you! Just using up all of the Electricity!
Think of the environment! Making batteries ain't all sunshine and rainbows!

If my adaptive cruise has to slow down for traffic do the brake lights come on?

On Honda I know they do come on if the system is actually braking. If it is just letting off the throttle, they don't come one. So similar to if I was the one doing the slowing down.
I do agree with puffnstuff in that they do have a time and a place. Driving on a busy interstate in Arizona with traffic constantly flowing between 55-75 mph, it was great to be able to set it and forget it.

Yeah, I like it when in a steady flow of traffic but when I come up on a car travelling significantly slower it doesn’t adapt until it has to brake hard, I feel like I’m playing chicken with the AI. Wondered if the guy behind me had to play chicken too.

Some are better than others than others. On one car I drove it felt like it just didn’t have the vision to smoothly adapt. Our next xc-90 is better smooth at it, almost too good in that you are driving along and then realize you’ve slowed down 10 Km/h due to the car in front being slow but it did it gradually I didn’t notice. So I think it does depend. I’ve used it on long drives where I’ve barely had to touch either pedal the whole drive using it.

My Subaru has it and I love it. I wasn't so sure about it, but tried it out on a road trip last summer and now I use it all the time. The only downside is that it IS smooth and sometimes if I come up on a slower vehicle, I don't notice right away how much we've slowed down.
And, yes, the brake lights come on if it brakes to slow down.

Nice, what kind of Subaru? Their eyesight technology has come so far, it used to be the worst.

It's a 2024 Crosstrek. This is the first Subaru I've had, so I'm not familiar with the old technology, but it's been great so far.

The brake lights will only illuminate if the vehicle has to apply the brakes. If it is simply not applying throttle to reduce speed (eg: keeping a gap on the highway), then the brake lights don't illuminate.

Man this weather blows. Looks like we are in store for a below normal spring according to the forecasts with temperatures getting back to normal in May. I suppose we should be used to it as it seems like Calgary springs haven't been that great for a few years now.

lol - this is what March is every single year. March is a winter month in this city full stop. Spring can start in early April but it’s not a given. Never expect the weather to turn to better until mid April.
March is a month to leave yyc and go on holiday.
You should know this.
