Saw "Talk To Me" today. Great horror flick with no cheap jump scares. If you like the new elevated horror films we've been getting the past decade.. babadook, hereditary, it follows etc this is a must watch.
I've seen Oppenheimer twice now, the second time on IMAX. [...]
I didn't think IMAX would matter much, but it's hard to describe: the film is so immersive and absorbing in this format. Watching as incredible images fill the giant IMAX screen is really something.
When someone describes the power of film, maybe they aren't just pretentious ###holes, maybe this is what they are talking about? (Wow, did I just say that? Maybe I'm a changed man now after seeing it in IMAX) I digress.
I finally saw Oppenheimer today, also in IMAX, and I think the fella seated next to me put it most succinctly. Within the first couple of minutes of the film there are a few vista shots of New Mexico, and when they popped up he leaned over to his friend seated to the other side of him and said "Holy ####..."
Oppenheimer is certainly a very pretty film, but I'm sure a lot of people who saw it were taken aback at how much of it is just people in a small room, talking. I don't think it really had much new to say about the man, or about the Manhattan Project, or about the idea of nuclear weapons to begin with. I suppose for the audience members who only fleetingly know who he was it'll perhaps be more... interesting.
Don't get me wrong, I liked it a lot, I think it had very few flaws:

1) the scene of Robert and Jean having sex while she just happened to pick the Bhagavad Gita off his shelf and happened to open it to the page with the famous "now I am become death" passage was suuuuuper schmaltzy to me and ruined the moment entirely in my opinion, and
2) the mention at the end of "the junior senator from Massachusetts" was eyeroll-inducing. For a movie that seemed to seek to tell the truth about a very true story as much as it did, this name-dropping of John F. Kennedy was super cringey. Strauss was a conservative Republican whom Senate Democrats—who held the majority anyway—already loathed for his politics, including the way he personally orchestrated the decision to not renew Oppenheimer 's security credentials. Strauss's confirmation as commerce secretary was opposed by most Democrats; Strauss didn't lose because Kennedy and a couple others changed their minds.
... but all-in-all I wasn't blown away.

Hearts Beat Loud is a wonderful film, that's like a warm bowl of soup on a cold winter's day, it will warm you up with all the feels. It stars Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons and Toni Collette and is basically about a single Dad who owns a record store who has a daughter about to move away for college. They have a jam session every so often and one time they put their song on Spotify and it starts to get some traction. Wonderful little indie film with amazing music, highly recommend.

I thought about putting this in the Stand-Up thread, but since it's a recorded special I'll post it here.
Jim Gaffigan went off-brand with his Dark Pale special on Amazon Prime. It's hilarious.
Part of the fun is listening to the confused silence in the audience. Everyone is waiting for a hot pocket joke while he jokes about his funeral and the vaccine.
That was fun.

Caught "Heat" over the weekend at Canyon Meadows, haven't seen it since the 90s when I rented it at Blockbuster. I forgot how good it was, same director who did Last of the Mohicans. Might be my favorite work that DeNiro has done, even with Pacino dialing it up a few times as he did in the 90s it somehow doesn't go over the top. So damn good.

It was good. Pretty unsettling. I thought both the beginning and end were really well done. Not often you get that from movies, let alone horror.
There's more horror films coming out than I ever remembered, and it seems like the genre is (generally) getting better. But the best content is from the independent filmmakers, and usually through A24.

Confession. I don't like Martin Scorcese.
I came to the conclusion after watching Wolf of Wall Street and I found I didn't like it for all the same reasons I don't like most of his movies. I find the characters all generally unlikeable and they are just too damn long. He needs a tighter edit. So much wasted time and fat.
I think my favorite of his movies is likely Cape Fear or Color of Money.
But the rest?
Meh.
I don't get the big deal about him.

I generally agree with that, except The Departed is firmly in my top 5 movies of all time.

I went and saw it on Friday there as well. My first time seeing it on a big screen and it was a spiritual experience. I love that movie so much

well that's a bold opinion that I have to partly disagree with.
I would say that his movies for the last 15 or 20 years have been overrated, but before that, much loves for many of them.
