Hey, if you like doing it I have no issues heavily inconveniencing you. It seems like your jam!

I need a lift home later from YHZ, we on?

I agree with you. I don’t mind at all and for family coming to visit I kind of feel like it’s a nice thing to do and being a good host.

Airport pickups are seriously easy now with fligh tracking apps like Flightaware and Flightradar24. Just watch the flight in real time and plan accordingly.

Who remembers the days of the one cable TV channel that showed arrivals for YYC?

Replace YYC with YEG/YXD and you bring back memories for me.

If you are going to pick someone up from the airport, why don't you ask the person to give you a call when their plane lands? It takes about 30-40 minutes from the moment the plane lands to the passenger get to the arrival gate, that's plenty of time for you to get to the airport without waiting in the cellphone lot or anywhere close.

Okay, yeah, if I'm hosting it's a different story.

My thing is when somebody (always a boomer) wants you to leave your house in the southeast, pick them up at the airport, drive them home to the northwest, then you go back home. Like, take a ####ing cab.

I think some people just like the special feeling of being ushered home so they can debrief on their trip with you while you just sit there chauffeuring them around.

Because then you're still just sitting there with your life on hold waiting for the call. It takes literally hours of your time when they could just take a 20-30 minute cab ride. Completely inconsiderate on their part.

You could just look what time the plane is supposed to land and mentally plan for that to be around the time you’ll have to leave.

I’ve never had to put my life on hold for hours to do an airport pickup. I also only ever pickup people I enjoy spending time with, so the drive with them is nice.

I think we're missing the big picture on this discussion, which is the mystifying length of time it takes after landing to get off a plane, grab a bag, and walk away.

I have flown in planes for over 30 years. Things are definitely getting slower, and I think just has to do with pure idiocy and inefficiency.

Hey guys, connect the little path to the door, open the ####ing door, and let people leave. Why is this taking 20 minutes? Meanwhile why do people struggle so much getting off a plane. The line of people waiting to go down the aisle? Yeah, if that is remotely close to your seat, get the #### ready to go. So much slow moving and doddling and struggling with bags in the overhead bin.

Flying blows now. It's just a straight up awful experience. ZERO customer service and they almost seem like they love to waste everyone's time. No respect for customer's time whatsoever. This all really shouldn't be that difficult.

Oh now everyone is loaded, bags are on the plane all ready to go. Okay, NOW I guess we can start de-icing the wings for the next 30 mins. Like, wtf, do that while people are loading?

It’s a mixture of all the changes that occurred post-9/11 and the public’s demand for rock-bottom flight pricing that is becoming increasingly out of line with paying people a living wage, energy costs, etc.

We’re getting the level of service we’re paying for.

Yeah, fully and completely agree. The entire process of flying is torture. You basically get to deal with people who are wholly inconsiderate and make things miserable for the entire thing.

It's not just that though. It's the pure contempt that everyone has for everyone else. They only care about them getting on, using all of the overhead compartment space they want, and having no issue holding everyone else up when it's time to get off.

I was on a flight to the UK last summer and a lady was there with a full leg cast. She wanted a wheelchair (which makes perfect sense). When they told her that she would need to wait until everyone else got off the plane so the they could get the chair to her and such, she changed her mind and decided to slowly and gingerly make her way off holding up dozens of people behind her. Maybe I'm alone here, but I could never do that.

Maybe so, but I think that’s the only real part of de-boarding that is solely dependent on the speed and efficiency of others, and at most causes an extra 2-3 minute delay.

I think it’s a symptom of the problem overall, rather than a cause.

Can we add in the ####ing strugglers at security?

Yes the dude telling everyone to take out their laptop and put it in a separate bin was talking to you.

Bringing on fluids or other items that need an individual clear baggy, then ####ing do it earlier than when your stuff is about to go through x-ray, or buy some travel shampoo FFS.

I didn't travel a tonne for work, but this new job has me flying every second week. Nexus card incoming.

omg security is just a straight up circus. The instructions don't change, are pretty simple, and yet...

The best is when I take a cab from the airport and the poor guy discovers, after waiting for two hours to get a fare, that I live right across Deerfoot 6 minutes from the airport.

I agree with what everyone says here. Flying is increasingly awful after 9/11, airlines squeeze passengers in every conceivable way to make the journey more miserable and passengers are generally selfish #######s.

It's only going to get worse.

I encourage people to get good travel credit cards. Flying business class and hanging out in specific lounges makes the process more bearable, especially when it's done on aeroplan points. I realize this isn't an option for everyone.

Why aren't you calling Sliver to pick you up instead if you live that close to the airport?

In that situation most airports don't de-ice at the gates. They have dedicated pads to do that, with collection systems for the runoff and such.

Calgary used to do it after pushing back from the gates, but moved away from it a few years back in favour of the two de-ice pads on the field.
