We should. Gio likely fetches a 1st round pick at the trade deadline. Monny likely costs a 1st round pick to move.
We would be ahead 2 first round picks and end up with tons of cap space.
This is really easy.

True. We should also trade Pitlick for Malkin.

With the season Gio is having is he fetching a high pick? You questioned my views of Monahan's decline earlier so you must believe there is still something there. Maybe Seattle still thinks he can be a top 6 C? If Monahan bounces back he is worth a higher return than an almost finished Gio.

Gio is an expiring contract, and GMs won’t be too fussed about his year. He gets a decent return, especially with salary retention. Monahan isn’t an expiring contract. And Seattle doesn’t need a 28 year old centre. I doubt Monahan has any shot at a bounce back in Seattle either.

Maybe but this is Ron Francis we are talking about. Anything is possible. Maybe we attach a Philips or Rucizka as a sweetner.

Which high priced forward on a non-expiring contract did Francis take for Seattle?
Exactly, he stayed away from those players.
Francis is likely the last GM interested in a Monny.
No one would take Monny’s contract right now. Maybe next year at the deadline.

No to Gio. This mix on D is good. There are other areas that come first. We have a 06 Hurricanes like defense. That's fine, it works with proper coaching. What we need to focus on is either trading for an upgrade at RW or C... the target Ideally is right handed. What you do affects Monahan. If you get a C, Monahan has to go to LW or get traded. Will cause issues because it's our deepest position. You will have to make 3 or 4 adjustments no matter, Monahan ideally is moved to make space for the upgrade. But you can't pay to trade Monahan. There are other ways here. Backlund should be 3C. Who is X here.. X/Lindholm. Missed Eichel but surely there is someone who can be at least lindolm's equal. Hertl? It's gonna cost. You ideally move future cap. All signs point to Monahan but how can you make a package around him in a way that it doesn't make you lose the trade? This should be BT's only focus right now. I don't envy him. He might need some jedi mind games like the hamiton trades

Monahan+2022 1st+Vladar for Hertl
Reasoning: wolf is ready imo. Next 3 years the tandem is some combo of wolf/Markstrom. Its the perfect mentoring situation. Need to capitalize on a position of strength. No room for vladar very soon. Capitalize on his increased value and bring in a big fish. I honestly think this trade provides value for both equally.

You could potentially trade Monahan for a similarly situated player I suppose - another guy who needs a change. But it wouldn’t create cap space.

Sure, much like when the Canucks moved Ericsson.

How can you say Wolf is ready? He’s been lights out in his first AHL season which has been like 15 games IIRC. Don’t rush him

Look at his progression. Look at his dominance. The AHL is nothing to him. He needs to be at the appropriate level. They all progress differently but he is crushing it and I think he's ready. Lots of b2b and 3 in 4 from here on out. Give him 15 games. Combined with the all the ahl games that's decent a fair amount of games for his rookie pro year. He's going to be special imo.

Yes, Wolf is crushing it in the AHL - where he is playing 2 of every 3 games. Bring him to the NHL and he sits in the best seat in the house. He'll play, what, 1 of every 5 games?
I'd rather Wolf play a full year in the AHL - including what is hopefully a long playoff run to a Calder cup.
Vladar is on a league minimum contract this year and next. He has way more value as a guy will sit and be happy, give Markstrom a rest, and who can win the odd game.
No point in moving him. Especially to a division rival.

Hertl is likely worth a first and Vladar.
SJ has zero reason to take on a bunch of cap.

Calls Gio the prize of the deadline. Lists the Oilers, Flames, Rangers as the most interested teams.

I recall the rumor that the Rangers were going to get Gio from Seattle right after the expansion draft. Felt like it had some legs. Wouldn't surprise me if he did end up there even though I don't think Seattle would trade their first captain right before the deadline. Felt like they got him to mentor some younger players but honestly who knows.
As for Gio back with the Flames, I can't see it. How do you bring back the former captain, and ask him to take a smaller role in a room that is no longer his on a team that has carved their own path with players in the room that have found their own voice?
Not to mention the ice time changes that would occur.
Just feels like it would cause issues, albeit unintentionally.

I feel like a Gio reunion is possible but I can’t see the Flames spending really prime assets to make it happen. I see the Flames offering something very similar to the Bennett package for Gio. 2nd + average prospect.
Do the Oilers want another 38 year old Dman after Keith? I think they have their assets in line for a goalie if anything.
Rangers make sense given they are a young up and coming team who likely could use Gio in every way.

But there's only one year of Gio under his contract. Is this the Rangers' year? I agree they are up and coming but I don't think they are a contender yet.
