Yeah, IMO this is going to go down the same as Tavares.
I don't think Johnny wants to leave the Flames, he just wants to see what happens, and he's going to get to free agency and his favorite team growing up is going to offer him a big pile of money and he's going to take it.
The only thing holding him here is legacy, and when he gets that offer he's going to weigh the pros and cons of staying and going, and there will be just way too many positives for him going back out east to be able to resist.
Hope I'm wrong.

Is Johnny superstitious?
Remind him that Stamkos and Landeskog both re-signed with their teams after going to the wire and they're both Stanley Cup champions now. Tavares signed with his hometown team after hitting free-agency and he hasn't won a playoff round since, but the Islanders have won 5 playoff rounds and gone to the final four twice since he left them.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still hoping for the dream scenario of trading away Lucic, enough IR cap relief to run it back with Monahan and re-signing both Gaudreau and Tkachuk. But the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Gaudreau, the 2nd overall pick plus whatever else we would have gotten for Tkachuk, along with the players we could have signed with Tkachuk’s cap space (a middle 6 centre, and some depth defensemen).

I don’t know, I think if he really was completely set on going UFA to see what happens we wouldn’t be getting this all this semi-conflicting info from Tre/insiders/media. Just choosing to believe that Johnny and his agent are professionals that would tell the flames org if Johnny was definitely going UFA.
OTOH if Calgary doesn’t come up with an offer he likes (and it seems obvious that whatever is currently on the table isn’t enough) your scenario is scarily plausible.

Johnny is a pretty loyal guy, and if he were to decide to leave it is a big decision. I think he likes it here and it is just business as usual for him and his agent. I try not to look to far into it and just trust the process.

Yeah, I can't see him leaving, this posturing is just part of the negotiating process. We've seen it before with other guys.

As long as I can access CP, I know nothing has been signed. I'll continue patiently waiting on that 404 message and good news. Still expecting him to sign

I do think it's funny how so many of us are panicking though. How long after Johnny signs do we think it will take until we go back to the conversations of he can't win in the playoffs, can't build a team around a small winger, Brad Treliving screwed us over, etc...?
I'd give it 1.5 seasons.

1.5 seasons? Try 1.5 months.

The same people who are saying Treliving should be fired for even allowing Gaudreau to get to this close to the open market will be the same ones saying Treliving should be fired for signing Gaudreau to the term and value, whatever that will be.

Guaranteed.
There are some who just latch on to the most negative narrative, even if it contradicts their previous one.

I think the Flames have to sell Johnny more than just money. Super easy to just sign him but I believe they also have to sell him a vision of his next 8 years. Because there's going to be some big changes to the group he'd be coming back to.
He's obviously going to want to know what they have planned for the immediate future (3-4 years) at the very least.

On the glass half empty front, I suppose that the reason there was a leak of Johnny’s ask of $11M might have been Gross signalling to eastern teams what they needed to start at.

What would a presentation from Philly look like?
"Yeah we're unsure if we're rebuilding or trying to compete now. We're trying to trade JVR, Provorov and potentially Ellis. We have to do that to fit you in under the cap. So you might have to take less tha market value to sign with us. And yeah we still have to make up a 40 point deficit to be in the playoff conversation. Yeah we had Gostisbehere a year ago but we gave up a pick to get rid of him, but don't worry - we traded for racist Gostisbehere yesterday. Our franchise player and captain was traded at the deadline because he wouldn't resign, because we're awful and will continue to be so going forward.
So you in?"

Sometimes the heart rules over logic. And, years 2-7 of that contract who's to say what that team looks like.
