Having reinvented the girl-punk wheel with Call the Doctor, Sleater-Kinney continues to expand the boundaries of the form with the stunning Dig Me Out. Leaner and more intricate than its predecessor, the record is remarkably confident and mature; instead of succumbing to the pressures of "next big thing" status, the trio finds vindication in all of their critical adulation — the vocals are even more ferocious, the melodies are even more infectious, and the ideals are even more passionate.
Probably still my favorite Alice record, though they are all excellent. I was fortunate enough to see them play early in their national touring days and they played almost every tune on this album. Best concert ever for me.
I hope you don't mind, but here's a little youtube goodness in honor of your selection.

It's tough to pick just one Tom album - the man has written so many fantastic songs and there's no one record which has them all. But as far as a start to finish flawless album goes, I don't think it gets better than Rain Dogs.
This was Tom's second album for Island and the second new-sound Tom Waits album. The boozy beatnik from the seventies had basically vanished in a nervous breakdown, fell in love with Kathleen Brennan (who would be his cowriter and producer ever since) and pitched his more sentimental side for a rougher, dodgier, weirder sound. Rain Dogs goes even further down the well than Swordfishtrombones had, adding the out-there guitar of Marc Ribot and the wholesome influence of Keith Richards.
well....no Sparks for a day and a half, so I guess that means its my turn
in the 2006-2008 category, Nine Inch Nails' digital release

not NIN's best album in my opinion, but free, and along with other free digitial downloads that were available in 2008, this album could be extremly influential in how artists, and the music industry approach the internet moving forward

Okay I am going to fill up the category of 1994-1996 with ...
Weeping Tile's Cold Snap
This is a Canadian Band from Kingston ON.
The band at the time of this release consisted of
Sarah Harmer: vocals, guitar, cowbell, piano
Luther Wright: guitar, vocals
Sister Mary: bass, vocals
Paul Gurnsey: Drums
Song List
1. Poked
2. Cold Snap
3. Pushover
4. ufo rosie
5. Good Fortune
6. In the road
7. l'il Interlude
8. The Grin
9. 1st Lady
10. Joint Account
11. Dolores Haze
12. Westray
13. The High Way
14. Hankerchiefs and Napkins
All songs written by Sarah Harmer except Ufo Rosie (written by Sarah and Lther Wright)
Sarah Harmer is probably most famous for her solo work after Weeping Tile went on extended hiatus late 90's.
Interestingly, I found out while googling that Harmer and Wright got together this month as Weeping Tile to do a show or two in Kingston.
My initial experience with this band was hearing Cold Snap. Found out who the band was, that they were from Canada, so bought the CD. Then I got to see them live couple times at The Republik and really fell in love with them...or the lead singer one of the two. Must be that it seemed she was singing to me as I stood front and center.
I used to jokingly call her my girlfriend as I did ask her out on a date after one show at the Republik. I was very drunk by that time, 0300!
I waited till all the other well wishers but one girl had gone, so it was just the band, staff and my ex and I (we were weird, we still hung out)
me: loved the show
Sarah: thanks
me: do you want to go get a drink somewhere?
Sarah: I think everywhere's closed
me: oh
(remember I am pretty drunk)
me: do you want to come to my place for a drink?
Sarah: I can't, I am meeting an old friend (the one other girl in the bar) but why don't you come back with us and party?
me: okay
So, my ex and I spent the next 2 hours partying with the band. It would have been more cool if I hadn't already been drunk. They had anything back there you could want.
My ex gf made a splash by telling them that she really want to bake cookies and give them to them. (A sign of how much she liked them) She told them she was too embarrassed to do it. They thought it would have been awesome.
I will post this first, then add some youtube

My pick might be late. I am really trying to come up with something that few people have heard of. I am also probably going to be in no state tomorrow to do anything other than vomit. I will try to get this done tomorrow evening but it might not be up until the second.
I have internet access here for about five minutes, so I will have to post my pick this afternoon or early evening when I get home. So, if rubecube or Jagger are around, go ahead and pick. I don't want to hold anyone up anymore than I already have... two days, ouch. Sorry guys. I thought I was going to have access to the internet, otherwise, I would have given myself an asskick before I went out of town.
This was released in 1997, but I don't think I happened to pick it up until a year or so after its release. My friend's sister recommended it to me and I got it and loved it. I think I really liked hearing the piano being used quite a bit. I have the cd and most of it on my ipod still.
Track Listing:
"One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces" - 3:52
"Fair" - 5:55
"Brick" (Folds/Darren Jessee) - 4:43
"Song for the Dumped" (Folds/Jessee) - 3:39
"Selfless, Cold and Composed" - 6:10
"Kate" (Folds/Jessee/Anna Goodman) - 3:13
"Smoke" (Folds/Goodman) - 4:52
"Cigarette" - 1:38

Better Late Than Never is proud to select, in the 2006-2008 Category, Dream Theater 'Systematic Chaos'.
Quote:
Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty" by John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess.
Dream Theater has become a successful progressive rock band, despite the drop in popularity of the genre since the mid-1970s. Although the band has had a few successful hits (notably "Pull Me Under" in the early 1990s, which received extensive MTV rotation), they have mostly stayed underground for their career.
The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians. Guitarist John Petrucci has been named as the third player on the G3 tour six times, more than any other invited guitarist, following in the footsteps of Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
This is one of my favorite bands. They recently came to Calgary and it was one of the most amazing musical displays I have ever seen. Every member of this band is an unreal musician and they design their show to showcase that.
