I don’t know what to even say, I am numb right now as I cannot believe what I’m reading. Johnny was my absolute favorite Flame of all time and I am beyond saddened to hear of his passing. Meeting him and talking to his Mom, it just makes this all the more tragic like losing a friend.
His family is so close, so you just know how incredibly devastated they all must feel right now. He was their whole world and was even our world for the time he was here. There aren’t any words to describe how sorry I am for their loss.
Rest in peace Matthew and Johnny, thank you for all the great memories and joy you provided, I’ll continue to defend you forever pal, it’s the absolute least I can do for you. I will proudly wear your jersey today while reliving all the great moments of your career. Thanks for everything you gave to this franchise and our fan, you will be dearly missed by so many.

This hits so hard because we all love Johnny and his family.
The Gaudreaus became Calgary's First Family and we loved them. That's why it stung so bad when Johnny left in FA. And that's why this tragedy has devastated us all, because we can't imagine what our favorite hockey family must be going through. The day of their daughter's wedding SMH.
Johnny meant so much to so many. He was to the newest generation of fans what Lanny, Fleury and Iggy were to many of us. I hope the Flames honor him properly (jersey retirement at a minimum).
RIP and thanks for the memories Johnny. You brought excitement back to the Flames and this city. I hope the wordsmiths of CP can do a better job than me writing tributes as I'm gutted and I appreciate reading the comments. #
It's a ####ing drunk driver running them down from behind. It could be a clear night with a beautiful sunset, you can't predict what an @sshole is going to do. This is maybe the single dumbest instance of victim blaming ever.
What is wrong with people?

Such an awful, heartbreaking tragedy. I can't even imagine what that family is going through right now. I just hope that they'll be able to eventually heal from this and find a way to move forward. The grief must be overwhelming.
Johnny was one of the most exciting and dynamic players I've ever had the pleasure to watch, and he seemed like such a terrific guy off the ice as well. I'm so thankful that we all got to watch him in Calgary for several years. He's obviously right up there with Iggy as one of the best players to ever don the Flaming C. RIP.
Thread title should be changed, makes it sound like it was natural causes or something other than the completely avoidable tragedy it is. #### drunk drivers.
I would change it but it was retitled by a mod when the news was confirmed, so I don't want to step on someone's toes.

Everyone always says hockey is just a game, but the game sucks you in. You are fully invested in the team, the players, you follow them from 17 years of age on up every detail.
This game gives you the opportunity to create memories with friends and family that live on forever.
The game 7 OT watching with my dad will be a memory I will always cherish.
Rest easy John.

I can guarantee there are people reading this that drink and drive. This is the most I've publicly said this, but I used to do it. When I drank, I couldn't not drink and drive. Sure, many times I would plan ahead and take a cab there, but for the unplanned times, somehow I would find a way. Zero control when I would drink.
There is so much guilt when I look back at this time in my life considering the implication it could have had on me, my kids, family, other families etc. I am so lucky nothing ever happened.
Had to make a decision, and for this reason (and others), I'm now almost 8 years sober.

Absolutely in shock. Completely numb when I saw the news. RIP Johnny and Matty. My heart goes out the entire Gaudreau family. Hockey/Sports feels like such an afterthought right now.
I have a small part of seasons tickets but took Johnny's first game back as an early pick. I went with mixed emotions. He was such a dynamic player and such a huge part of this franchise for so long, but he also broke our hearts when he left. It hurt to see him in another jersey. Much of the Dome was booing him when he touched the puck.
Then they played his tribute video during a commercial break and you could feel the crowd swell with emotion as it played. So many amazing moments. I joined the standing ovation with tears in my eyes.
I have tears in my eyes again. This is so sad. RIP Johnny, you'll be missed, and thank you for all the memories.
People understand that the media can’t make any judgements about the nature of a fatal incident that hasn’t gone to trial and where nobody has been charged yet, right? If they ran the headlines people seem to want them to run, they’d open themselves up to libel.

Just let people feel what they feel and express themselves for christ’s sake.
It’s OK if grief isn’t logical or fair today.
