I can't believe how late they are starting. Fowler not teeing off until 3:40 PM west coast time.

I know this course is pricey, but didn't think the USGA would need the twilight rate that badly.

That must be rough on viewership numbers assuming that the east coast might be the largest market. The round won't end until about 11 or so.

The late tee offs is probably the best part of West Coast majors. 11pm EDT finish gets basically the whole round into prime time. Which would actually be even cooler if NBC's coverage weren't complete dog feces. I get that live sports are basically the last thing networks can still generate good ad dollars, but it's still been an embarrassing event from a commercial perspective.

What’s wrong with the NBC coverage?

Yeah I was thinking damn that's a good looking shirt myself too!

I'd like to see Fowler get one here too. Looks like he's worked pretty hard to get his game back.

81 yard par 3 today. That seems like a joke.

I mean I pretty clearly spelled out the commercials. But I'll also add that Azinger has become pretty much as bad as Miller was. They should let ChatGPT commentate, might be more fun that way.

I haven’t really noticed. Honestly I just don’t focus too much on what the commentators have to say in any sport but I don’t mind Azinger at all. If milquetoast is what you prefer then Immelman is your man.

I guess there’s a lot of commercials. C’est la vie.

This course is really a tale of two nines. The front nine is about the easiest we've seen in recent major history, the back nine offers a bit more challenge, but it's a scoring challenge and not bogey challenge. There just aren't many holes you can meltdown with on this course.

Xander might have just put himself out of the tournament with three shots out of a fairway sandtrap on #1. Interesting way to start the round.

How Schaufele is only 1 over after this first two holes is why pros are pros and Joe's are Joe's. That would be an 8 -8 start for me making misplays like that on a non US Open course.

The airplane noise in the background, constantly, is annoying.

Agreed....though this way they get prime time golf in the east and central time zones.

Every major championship should have a pitch ‘n’ putt par 3 in the middle of it

The last groups will be finishing after sunset even if they keep on a decent pace. It seems weird to run up that close to darkness if there are any delays.

There are lots of bogeys out there on both sides. Lots of cards without many pars.

Pretty stacked first page of the leaderboard, which is always the best indicator of a good setup. I don't really care one way or another what the actual scores are. It is a bit crazy that -8 was the 1st round lead, and looks like -10 to -12 will probably be the lead after 3 rounds.

Those last holes seem like they play into the sun too. At least 18 does.

Yeah for all the talk about the course being to easy, there are only 15 guys under par right now.

Pin placements tomorrow are likely to be somewhat more difficult as well.

I'm starting to think -8 or worse may end up winning it.
