So maybe we are all just missing something about Columbus in relation to Johnny.

Yeah, that's probably the strangest part about today. You'd think he wouldn't hesitate to sign with a team just 2 hours away from home, offering similar money to Calgary, and is arguably in a better position than Columbus.
I think there's more than meets the eye here to this signing.

Unless he really did hate it in Calgary I think it was mistake to tell the Flames he wasn't coming back. Instead he could have told them he wanted to see what his options were before making a decision. I think maybe he knew if he circled back to the Flames after saying he wasn't coming back things wouldn't be the same.

Johnny’s dad played shinny with us sometimes. I believe they liked Calgary as a family.

Now that Gaudreau is playing for a divisional rival, I'm sure we'll get to hear Burke say plenty.

JG can get ####ed.
Honestly.
I'm supremely annoyed by this and I wasn't planning on being.

He went to the American team that paid him the most.

It depends what Johnny tells him. And it's not like no athlete has ever went to free agency and came back anyway.

On the one side I am very happy that since he was leaving he couldn’t be going to a more irrelevant franchise so we won’t hear much about him. On the other hand it stings to see him leave so much money on the table to go to team that is worse than his current, and not overly close to home. I get that it is significantly closer but $15M and a legacy torched?
I hope we hear Lewis Gross is fired soon

What I mean is that I think Treliving might not trust Gross at all. He might just think he’s being used to drive up prices again.

Maybe it came down to his wife and her family. It always seemed like the Gaudreau's genuinely liked Calgary.

FWIW I heard Columbus has a great paediatric hospital - maybe she thinks she would have opportunity there.

Not sure I agree.
If Edmonton offered 10 and Winnipeg offered 9.8, you go to Winnipeg and stay away from that Oiler stink.

Columbus is a lot closer to Philly than Calgary, plus he's playing in the same division as Philly. For all I know maybe he grew up hating on NYI and Jersey.

For all the agent haters: Gross would have made more money on the CGY deal (or any 8 year deal for that matter).
I don’t recall his client list, but this might be the first really big UFA deal he’s done?
