I am not a fan of Kane's behavior, but if he has a legitimate case, I hope San Jose is on the hook for paying him and that it counts against their cap.
It seems pretty obvious that they were looking for an out and I wouldn't be surprised if there are some shenanigans at work here. Just because Kane is a jerk, it doesn't mean the Sharks organization are saints either.

Sounds like he ditched his AHL team ignoring the leagues covid protocol...not a minor offence.
Big part of the teams being allowed to travel and play is following the guidelines. NHL has postponed over 100 games and this guy thinks he can just do whatever he feels like.

If this is true I don't see how the PA can fight his contract termination, on too of the league absolutely dropping the ban hammer on him.
This is a straight character issue. It shows a blatant disregard for others (regardless of your pandemic politics) and also shows direct insubordination to a team, league and sport that he has had ample opportunity to make tens of millions of dollar if he just kept his head down.
Sprinkle in the fact he's Flipping bankrupt from the already made tens of millions he's already earned.
He's just a selfish irresponsible person who has exiled himself from every team he has played for.
Yeah, let the Oilers sign him.
God blessed talent absolutely wasted. Just poured down the drain.

Well...its quite literally their job to do so.
They won't likely win if the rumors are true, but they have an entire legal staff paid to represent these guys whether or not they are questionable characters.

The sticky part of COVID protocols is that it's not something that would be written up in his contract seeing COVID wasn't a thing when he signed it. I'm no legal expert so I don't know how pandemic measures translate to contracts that likely never took any of this in consideration.

True. In fact, wasn't it reported that Iginla really pushed for it?

I remember when Bertuzzi was introduced to the media he said the entire reason he chose to sign in Calgary was because of Jarome

Bert had an on ice incident defending a teammate. He punched a guy in the head and then landed on him. The resulting injury had everything to do with the seriousness of the incident, similar things happen often in hockey.
20 ish game suspension like Kane just had...Bert didn't do the exact thing in his first game back

This is peak Oilers. Get the fan base all riled up for a signing and then some outside force twarts them. Like a suspension, or a fax machine, or the player realizing they'd have to go to Edmonton.

Like he just went AWOL on the team without permission? I must have missed that.
I was considering a situation where he may have notified them verbally that he wanted to travel to Vancouver, and they were like yeah, whatever, you do you. Then as soon as he did, they bust him for breaking protocols.
San Jose was looking for a way out and if they gave him implied permission by knowing about his intentions and not pointing out the consequences, then I think they should be responsible. I don't know if that is what happened, but I wouldn't be shocked either since contract termination was likely something they were researching for a while.

Yeah, as said they have to. They likely wont win, but they have to do their jobs.
What is intriguing to me though is that this final infraction that triggered the termination of his contract actually appears to have occurred in the AHL which is outside of the NHLPA's jurisdiction.
So it will be interesting to see what happens there. It could be that because this all happened in the AHL that the team cant terminate an NHL contract?
I dont know.

Yeah, it’s not just that he’s a bad person, though it sure seems like it. He’s a bad team member according to the Jets and the Sharks’ players.
And for those saying Sutter could control him - well maybe. But Sutter to me is more a guy who gets players to play a better style, not a guy who’s well known for rehabbing bad character. And why would he even want to bother - he prefers getting players who suit him rather than changing them.

Yeah, I don't think the "Air Bud" defense is going to fly here.
Pretty sure the language is broad enough that it covers any circumstances that arise and are agreed to by the NHL/NHLPA, which would include COVID protocols.

However, the rest of the things that people are bagging on E. Kane about like gambling, false claims from his vindictive and crazy ex-wife, etc., is being overblown. Lets look at some examples:
- Jagr is a notorious gambler and womanizer with significant debts, but he never received nearly the same media coverage about it that E. Kane does.
- Patrick Kane has physically and sexually assaulted numerous people, which is swept under the rug.
- Tony Deangelo is a Trump-ist with a history of racism that dates back to his junior days, but there has been minimal media coverage on him besides the NYR scuffle.
- Jeff Carter was kicked off of Philly for partying and is rumored to have slept with his teammate's wife, but there was minimal media coverage on that as well
Besides the Covid-issues, E. Kane is being vilified for acting no different than the rest of the hockey fraternity (i.e. acting like a typical dumb jock/pro athlete), but like many of his peers (e.g. Emery, Ho-Sang, Subban, A. Carter, etc.) there's a media target on his back because he's "different". It's ridiculous
I am not absolving Kane of his stupidity, but the conditions on the Flames are present to make acquiring him a success for both parties and Treliving is an idiot if he doesn't pursue it
|
Have their been (m)any other players who did pretty much all of the above?
I'm also not sure 'media coverage' is the bone to pick here. A key difference in E Kane's case is his ex-wife going public on twitter...that is something tangible that can be reported. I don't recall enough about the P Kane case(s), but the legal proceedings can inhibit coverage to some extent (yet there was still plenty of coverage). The others are largely rumour and innuendo, which isn't fertile grounds for legitimate reporting.
The thing to question might be the 'forgiveness' from fans. P Kane is the only one who has remained with the same fanbase as when he committed his sins...and the scandals related to the Blackhawks is a whole nother debate.
Could fans do more to protest the others? Perhaps...

Kanes behavior in ALL instances makes me wonder how he's not already behind bars or dead.

seems to me that kane seems to thrive when there is drama in his life.
you would think that someone close to him would help him "lie low" for a while, but he just cant seem to help himself
