According to a close inside source of the flames.. the Twitter post from reddit does not specify the source, but suggests
we are involved in two big trades involving both Stone and Hayes. Buckle up guys. This is shaping up to be an insane 20 hours.
That sounds a lot like messing with the lineup in a major way which BT said he was opposed to doing.

Wasn't that the guy who got banned from Reddit Hockey for posting fake rumours about William Nylander? Or am I thinking of someone else?
I believe he said Toronto was listening to offers on Nylander before he signed. I think its fair to say they definitely did, because why wouldn't they?
Doesn't mean he has any actual inside info though.

I wonder how much money we would save on signing Stone now, versus being the highest bidder in the summer. It's hard to imagine the difference is worth all of those assets.
Just because he's a UFA doesn't mean he goes to the highest bidder.
Tavares didn't go the highest bidder, he went where he saw a fit, in a place he wanted to be, on a team with a young core and a Cup contention window just starting to open up.
I think the Flames will have a great shot at signing Stone this summer if he goes UFA (or if they trade for him).
1. Cup contender
2. Young core
3. Canadian market (he seems to like that)
4. His brother is already here (could be a huge positive?)
Of course, if there is a contender out there willing and able to pay him $10.5 million per, then I guess all bets are off.

I have a hard time understanding why a player in Stone's position would want to negotiate a contract extension with any team before getting traded at the deadline. Wouldn't he want to try out the new city/team/coach before signing long term and at a potential discount to what he could get on the open market? It's not like he cares if the Senators get an extra draft pick.
Lots of reasons:
-He may be able to negotiate more now due to team paying for certainty
-There may be other UFA's in the summer that increase selection and decrease contracts
-The best suitors may have playoff success without him and decide they don't actually need him
-He may like the team he's going to and see value in playing there, competing for a cup
-He may like the city he's going to and see value in committing there for a while (family/personal reasons)
-He may get injured before the end of the year and miss out the opportunity for this big contract; nothing is guaranteed.
I could go on, but there are many reason a player may prefer to lock up their contract instead of letting it play out longer
