he'll be a number 4 in Calgary, but make no mistake ... he wasn't for the Isles.

Essentially he was a number 2 then, crucial point! That changes his value dramatically. Lets not lose sight of this.
A trade of a late first round pick, late second round pick and late third round pick equivalent (late 2nd - mid 4th) is definitely worth a number 2 defenseman on a cheap contract with 3 year term!

Trying not to get too excited, because the game isn't played on paper...but you read what Isles fans have to say about this guy and the type of player he is.
We needed a prime right shot version of Robyn Regehr who can skate and pass better than Reggie did.
This is the guy.
Treliving doing what he can to push this team from the "walking" stage into the "running" stage.

We pretty much have two #1 D pairs now, at least on paper.
As I posted above, the Flames were better defensively than offensively last year, yet their first two big asset expenditures (and priorities according to you) were both aimed at improving defensively.
Not just improving defensively. We didn't have d-men under contract (Engelland and Wideman out) so it needed to be addressed. We have a full contingent of forwards under contract for next season. While there can and hopefully will be upgrades, defense only had the top three and then several important holes to fill. The two situations were very different in that regard.

Again, according to Treliving, straight from the horse's mouth.
You're free to think whatever you want, but it's clear the organization felt differently than you do and stated it as such. I agree with them and don't think it's as simple as looking at the goals for and against last year to determine whether the greater need is offense vs. defense.
Hamonic fills a huge need and makes our D bigger and tougher. It gives Brodie a legit partner giving us one of the best top four's in the league at a bargain price. I can see why they put a priority on the D.

I feel like with Stone the Flames probably have an offer in and it will come down to Stone seeing what the market is for him.
By all accounts his family wants to stay here - so if the market ends up being soft then I could see there being a fit.
I wonder if Stone feels he can be more than a bottom pairing defenseman and that with Hamonic in the picture he's not going to get that chance in Calgary barring injuries.

People wanna label him as a #4 defenseman. I'd say that's only true on some teams in the league. Honest question. If Hamonic and Brodie played for the Oilers would they be their number two pairing? Not in my opinion. He's a top pairing guy on a lot of teams.

Hamonic and Brodie would be the Oilers top pairing and it's not really that close.

The flames are ****ing annoying. Any time we're interested in a player, they're ALWAYS on them too.

Cue the meltdown.
Quote:
Teams have it out for the Oil I swear.
First we get screwed by Boston for Dougie because Sweeney is a bitter GM, and we can't get the Hamonic for Eberle trade that both fans seem to think is fair cause Snow got dirt on Chia based on the deals we've made so far.
Quote:
You've got to admit, it's a bit frustrating that the team down the highway seems to so easily add legit top 4 RHD for nothing but picks/prospects, when the only way we could get one was through giving up our at the time 2nd best player.

It's maddening actually

This is bad

First and 2 seconds for hamonic?
**** you chia

Holy crap! Chia just got schooled by Treliving

Chiarelli got caught with his pants down again while the Flame acquire a better, cheaper defenseman.
Quote:
yup.... they have 2 guys in their top 4 and essentially paid nothing to get them.... he have 1 guy in our top 4 and lost a 60-70 points/year player for him.... jesus.... our GM is not very good
Quote:
I just realized this is the same price we paid for Reinhart minus a 2nd hah
Quote:
This makes me sick to my stomach. I can't believe this ********. This has been the worst off season we've had in a while.
How do you screw this up? Hamonic could of been an oiler had chiarelli not been an idiot.
Quote:
Chiarelli looks incredibly dumb missing out on Hamonic.
It's concerning. Can he build a championship team around McDavid? I doubt it.
Quote:
In the last 24 months, The Flames have added 2 top 4 D for a price pretty similar to what we paid for Griffin Reinhart.
We don't have a good GM folks.
Quote:
It hurts looking at what Calgary gave up to get Hamilton and Hamonic, vs what the Oilers paid for Larsson and Reinhart
Quote:
Yeah, I'm a little pissed now. Was holding out hope that it was Bennett going the other way but come on Chia, you couldn't top this? Christ
Quote:
Like some have said, maybe Chiarelli wasn't interested or maybe, just maybe, Snow was always going to be the ***** that he is to the Oilers.
Quote:
Hamonic cap hit is less than Russel's just saying
Quote:
Could Chia have played the last 3 days any more poorly? I bet he didn't even consider Hamonic/Barrie/anyone else. Hamonic will go to Calgary for peanuts and we'll be stuck with a boat anchor of a contract on a third pairing dman.
Quote:
I'm sorry but you just can't defend signing Russell to that deal and watch Hamonic go to your division rival for basically peanuts...
Everyone hates us
Quote:
I honestly think other GMs put the screws to Chiarelli and ask for a king's ransom in trades because the Oilers won the McDavid lotto.
I know...tinfoil hat talk, but damn that's what it seems like.
Quote:
My head's honestly kind of spinning at the assets we've sent out since Chia took over just to end up with one RHD. And Chia gets a huge pass for everything he does because he's not Old Boys Club.
Quote:
Time and time again Chia get's fleeced in trades, and fleeced in contracts, while other GM's are pulling the exact pieces we need for penny's on the dollar. Yet, because he was handed a team with the best 1-3 centermen core in the league and a bona fide #1 defenceman he gets a pass?
Let's be honest with ourselves, the guy has some serious flaws. We don't need to felate him because he happened to be at the helm for the turn around.

Would be nice if we can get Bennett

Hopefully Bennett and a pick.

why do i feel like bennet is included.

My guess is either 1st + 2nd + Kylington
Or just 1st + Kylington

Backlund+?

Hearing Monahan.

One of Bennett or Backlund are involved, I assume.
GM in disguise

It was rumoured he wanted to be out west, so he got his wish. Wonder what furball Burke coughed up this time.
Quote:
Its Burke...Must be 2 1st.

Flames already have one of the better DCore and Hamonic added to the top 4 might make the best.
Burkie not afraid to trade top picks away.

Burke isn't even their GM
Will be missed

Regardless of your opinion on the return, Travis Hamonic bled orange and blue. Dude was a class act in the community and on the team. I'll be cheering for him in Calgary and I'll make sure to welcome him back when the Flames visit Brooklyn.

Took a picture holing my daughter in his arms when he was a rookie

I feel even more sad. Hammer signed my jersey. I'll always have love for him no matter what.
Interested in the return.
Quote:
So one of the worst teams defensively trades their best defenseman? How does that make sense.
Quote:
I'm sad. Love Hammer. Such a warrior
Quote:
I am sad about this for losing Travis. We are a worse club today without. Who is going to fill his role? Hickey? Not good. We just got even smurfier.

Gonna miss Hammer. Glad he gets to go West near his home though. I'm sure I won't be happy with the return...
The Scouting Report
Quote:
Hamonic is a stud when right. He was playing through multiple injuries last season also dealing with family issues which is why he was traded west. He is the islanders best defenseman and will be sorely missed. Not much to like about. He is tough/physical good skater with descent offense who plays big minutes.
Quote:
He had an unusual life circumstance that impacted his past two years. What you will be getting:
- Big physical defenseman. Easily one of his strengths particularly in front of the net.
- Mobile with the puck. The good here is obvious. The bad is he is not afraid to go into Orr mode and skate it deep... like behind the opp net deep then get trapped. If your coach has something better than a ham sandwich between his ears he will stop these bad tendencies.
- Solid at stopping a play in his own and and starting a breakout.
- Plays his absolute BEST when he keeps his game simple and exploits his mobility to start a rush.
- At his WORST when he thinks he is Coffey on the rush.
- Stupid great contract.
- Not afraid to stick up for his team mates. He is one of the very very few on our club willing to keep things honest on the ice and not skate away like a Mary.
Quote:
Hamonic, when healthy, is a decent middle pair defenseman with good size that can play physical, skate well and win a lot of 1 on 1 battles. He isn't all that poised with the puck and isn't very saavy, so don't expect much offense out of him. Guy is a meat and potatoes type dman....but he skates well and does a good enough job of carrying the puck out of his end when he has time and space to do so.
Along with that, the guy is all heart and busts his ass every shift which makes a lot of ppl (coaches incl) fall in love with him and think he's Chris Pronger in his prime. This confusion causes him to get overworked and mis-used, eventually leading to a drop off in play or an injury.
Imo, CDH passed him and is the superior player by quite a bit.
Overall, if you can keep him on the middle pair at around 20 minutes he's solid.

It was the same with Hamilton and it felt so great to re-read the posts knowing the return. "It's gotta be Gaudreau or Bennett going back". "Well maybe it's Giordano, which wouldn't as great but it'll give us a great D man with leadership back".
From Isle fan comments it sounds like he struggles a little in a top pairing role, but gives you top pairing quality D when played on a second pairing. Perfect for us, because he'll slide seamlessly into our second pairing and we'll effectively have four top two D-men.
Calling him a “little brother,” Snow was cognizant of what Hamonic’s absence will mean to the franchise.
“I think the world of him on and off the ice. He’s well deserving of winning the award the other night in Vegas,” he said. “Just a first class player and first class person. These deals are always tough to do because there’s an emotional element, how we use him in our community, the locker room. It’s a move we’re willing to make because of the great depth on the blue line.”

Not to be picky but, IMO, at this point , the Flames have a 1D in Giordano and a certain future 1D in Hamilton, who is a 2D right now.
Brodie and Harmonic are 3 and 4 D on most contending teams...no more and no less.
Looking good!
