I'm excited to see what he can do in Calgary.

Ya should of used body of work instead of stats in my argument but we're on the same page.

Because Fleury has a NMC and doesn't want to play in Calgary. If you're going to come on here and start bitching and moaning, at least try to catch up to current events first.

Man that would be terrible if one of the prospects became a legitimate number 1 goalie AND we make the playoffs too!?!?!
That would be a disaster! Someone better call the Paw Patrol.

Pittsburgh wasn't going to trade him and then lose a guy like Dumoulin in the Expansion Draft.

Do we know this 100%? From what I understand we do not. We know he waived his NMC to be exposed in the expansion draft, yes, but we don't know 100% he said no about got to Calgary

There were rumours that Hickey was never going to sign.
So its a 2nd for Smith at 75% of his salary (not making the playoffs is not an option). So this time next year we'll know if it was a good trade.
If Rittich or Gillies steals the job from him that's OK too.

Yes, we know it. He has a list of teams he cannot be traded to and Calgary is one of them.

At first I hated this trade. After reflecting on it, I don't mind it.

Do you have a link to said list? From what I heard Kelly Hrudey was trying to sell the finer points about Calgary to MAF during the finals

I dont know about that, teams who play backups for a full season (See: Canuck, Vancouver: Auld, Alex) dont tend to do well overall.
I dont get the anger here. I actually think this is a great deal. Treliving papered over some cracks getting a decent starting goaltender for few assets.
The rights to a backup goaltender and prospect that has been hesitant to sign as well as a conditional pick in exchange for a starting goaltender with salary retained.
He bought our kids 2 years to get it together and steal the job for a fairly reasonable price.

After some reflection and reading through the reactions on various websites I am okay with this trade. Smith was not my first choice in the list from the poll. I had him at 8 or 9. But I can deal with it.
Here is some of my thinking.
1 Maybe this is not over. What the Flames have now is a goalie they will protect in the Expansion draft. No one believed it would be McCollum. This summer goalies are in play more than they ever have been. There are still possibilities that someone else opens camp as our probable starter.
2. One thing I didn't want was a UFA with a lot of term a la Bishop. Older goalies with lots of term left are hard to trade. There are some good arguments against the stopgap goalie but I believe the Flames are at the opening of their window, not actually in it quite yet. Next summer we are fully in it. And I believe Gillies and/or Parsons are going to be the guy once the window is fully open. Therefore a stopgap is appropriate.
3 Getting Arizona to take 25% is good GMing.
4 Johnson, who I would have been fine with resigning (max 2 years at 2.5 per) is a UFA and therefore barely still an asset so no problem with him being included. (Side note I would like to see more local guys on the team but whatever)
5 Hickey. I'm a big Hickey supporter and sorry to see him go. Those that say he wasn't going to sign have no proof. But I can't deny there are indications of such a thing. Trading him removes that stress and I won't miss all the posts that would have happened this year regarding it. Plus it is fair to say that his progression has been a little concerning. He has been passed by a few prospects and may never have panned out.
6 The 2nd rounder. I call it a 2nd because I am very confident we will make the playoffs. Would rather have kept it but teams in the window have less draft picks (except Chicago but only because they've had so many massive cap-crunch player selloffs) fact of life.
We move on. With Smith or without I still think we're moving up.

The entire list hasn't been leaked, but I believe it was Mackenzie that mentioned Calgary, specifically.

I'm just not impressed in the slightest. Everyone on twitter is laughing at us. I don't see us going anywhere with Smith. Well at least the 2018 draft has that superstar russian coming. Sergachevs younger brother I believe. Would be great to draft him in 2018
