McDavid is a really, really good player. But every time I've seen him he takes a heavy hit at least once or twice a game. He is generally bad at protecting himself. We already saw him get hurt last year, his first year, and it doesn't look like he's changed his style based on the first game of the this season. You know that other teams are going to be targetting him every chance they get. You almost never saw Gretzky get hit like that and if he did Semenko would kill the guys family. If Lucic has to fight every time McDavid gets hit cleanly he'll have PTSD by Christmas.
Don't get me wrong, I don't wish injury to McDavid but the way he's going it kind of seems inevitable. For his sake I hope he plays with a little more caution -starting right after he demands a trade out of The City of No Good.

He looks like a cross between a crazed hobo and a guy who would collect his own urine in mason jars and his toe nail clippings in cigar boxes.
Seriously I watched 5 minutes of the Darryl Katz super ego interview hour last night when I got home and the guy gave me the creeps.

It was practically unbelievable. I felt as though I was watching a campy movie featuring a character actor who was doing his best to over-exaggerate the character whom he was portraying. If there ever was a real, live caricature of himself, Katz is it.

It was pretty surreal. It was like a Mel Brooks movie... but real life. How someone that is so clearly a raging narcissist got so far I don't know.

What happened? Did Wayner give Connor a hummer at center ice? I didnt watch their opening ceremony and nothing surprises me anymore.

I think, if Matthews continues to rip it up, that we are going to see some pretty sour Oiler fans.

I put one on the top of the other and called it a Jr. McGangbang (the regular McGangbang is a double cheeseburger inside of a McChicken).

Of course they are. Cause this is as good as it has gotten for them in years passed.
McDavid was impressive. The Oilers as a team were not. They had better zone exits and cycling than the Flames at times but had equally bad stretches and moments as well.
A Lot went their way last night. I don't see that repeating over a second game, especially with the adjustments Calgary will make, and being able to control matchups.
McDavid also won't get to line up against Wideman any more. He gets to deal with Gio-Brodie on friday. It won't be a walk in the park.

i thought both Giordano's penalty with McDavid coming out of the corner and Wideman's penalty to create the penalty shot were both weak calls. Wonder if McDavid will get that benefit of the doubt with the refs all season.

We'd be gloating too if we dropped 7 on them in our arena opener.

Let them have their fun. They'll be out of the playoffs before American Thanksgiving. Neither team really deserves a win last night.
1st Edmonton goal: pure gift from Grossman
1st Calgary goal: weak defense and sloppy goalie
2nd Edmonton goal: weak blocker, sloppy goalie
3rd Edmonton goal: bad line change, good deke by Kassian
2nd Calgary goal: bad PK, terrible neutral zone giveaway, good shot by Brouwer
3rd Calgary goal: another bad PK, solid drive by Backlund, sloppy goalie
4th Edmonton goal: sloppy goalie
5th Edmonton goal: a gift wrapped goal courtesy of officiating
6th Edmonton goal: solid goal by JP, another weak blocker from Elliott
4th Calgary goal: good PP
7th Edmonton goal: empty netter
Pretty sloppy by both teams. Take away all the goals caused by bad goaltending and McDavid's freebie and it's a close 3-2 game.
That was almost as bad a game as we could play. Lots of room for improvement: new D pairings, bounce back from Elliott, more time for the 1st line to gel, better officiating, etc. On Edmonton's side, that's probably an average game for them and won't win them many games against a team that isn't imploding.

Now that would have been brilliant.
Gary Bettman just walks out of the crowd to centre ice:
"You all....just....just stop. You all just have to stop. Just...go home...get your #### together. Get it all together...and put it in a backpack. All your ####. So its together.
And if you gotta take it somewhere, take it somewhere, you know? Take it to the #### store and sell it. Or put it in a #### museum. I dont care what you do, you just got to get it together. Get your #### together."

They've scheduled an hour long ceremony before their next game to raise it.

This is a very plausible rumour...
They should get it done quickly because anyone who ever played for them is either in town or on staff. We could also get the concession team and everyone else that was out there last night back on the ice; it wouldn't even have to be rewritten!

Did anyone else think the corners in Rogers Place rink are larger radius than usual? The ends just seemed more rounded than they usually are.
