Burnham: "That's not possible all matter native to our universe resonates with the same quantum signature. Nothing can change it."
Lorca: "That is true."
15 minutes later
Burnham: "Modifying our ship's signature to match that of mirror Discovery."
Also the USS Defiant being in the mirror universe is a reference to when the Enterprise series (the one with Scott Bakula) went into the mirror universe.

This bothered me but I thought had misheard. But you are right, here are the exact words from the transcript.
First:
SARU: I may have something.
The quantum signature of the Cooper, as well as that of the Vulcan cruiser, are inconsistent with ours.
BURNHAM: That's not possible.
All matter native to our universe resonates with the same quantum signature, nothing can change it.
That's true.
Unless this is not our universe.
Then later:
The rebel logs show their ships being attacked by a vessel with a warp signature matching our Discovery, but with a quantum signature matching this universe.
They're hailing us again, sir.
That signature seems to have vanished at the same coordinates where we popped in.
- So - It is possible we switched places with their Discovery.
I'm gonna run with Mr. Saru's theory in the hope that we don't bump into ourselves and blow our cover.
- Burnham.
- Modifying our ship's signature to match that of mirror Discovery.

How come an alternate universe with hundreds of years different history has the exact same people at the same age?
I see this is your first Star Trek mirror episode, it's best not to think too hard about it. Besides as Rick & Morty have shown, there are an infinite number of universes with an infintite number of combinations, so Discovery just happened upon one where humanity differed at the point of first contact. In the movie First Contact the Vulcans land on Earth and party with Zefram Cochrane, leading eventually to the Federation. In the mirror universe Cochrane shoots the Vulcans with a shotgun and pillages their ship for technology, leading to the Empire

Yeah, from there mankind united and took to space using the Vulcan technology, and were able to conquer and enslave the Vulcans, Andorians and Klingons.
During the events of Enterprise there was a rebellion by the alien races but it was pretty close to squashed when the Mirror Empire took the Defiant and its 100 year in the future technology. Originally the Empire triumphed and Hoshi became the Empress.
But apparently there are still rebels in the Discovery timeline.
At some point after this the Empire triumphs and Vulcans become a part of the Empire instead of a slave race. Spock becomes the first officer on the Enterprise after James Kirk murders Captain Pike.
The Enterprise incident occurs and in a series of books we find out that Kirk becomes the Emperor and is considered one of the most brutal emperors in history. To show his brutality he has McCoy and Checkov and Scotty executed on the suspicion of treason.
Spock uses the Tantalus device and overthrows Kirk. He becomes the new Emperor and begins to enact reforms. He renames the position of Emperor as Commander in Chief and he begins to soften the slavery of other races.
Kirk flees to the Klingon's and brings together an alliance of the Klingons, Cardassians and other former slave races who reward Spocks reforms by attacking the Empire. They enslave humanity and as a gesture of punishment destroy Earths Eco-system.
What happens to Spock and Kirk isn't really covered very well, except that at some point he leads tries to seize power again with the help of the Mirror TNG crew.
Then we flash forward to the events of DS9.

Question . . . when Tyler walks into Lorca's office why isn't the tribble freaking out. Tribbles are the natural enemy of the Klingons which caused the great Klingon war.

Is his Tribble even alive? I thought the damn things were born pregnant.
Have they ever shown Tyler in Lorca's office when the Tribble was there?
I just quickly ran through this week's episode, and Tyler is never in Lorca's office. We do see the Tribble early in the episode when Lorca, Burnham, and Saru are in the office, but Tyler isn't present.
The Tribble is alive because it can be seen breathing and it can also be heard cooing.
I believe in the previous episodes they've always been careful to make sure Tyler and the Tribble were never in the same room together.

Why is that your concern and not how a medical scan can miss it? I mean they have full body scans and you would imagine Starfleet would have high end biometric security. If they can spoof that, confusing a rodent should not be a big deal.
Considering the Internet is such a horrible place sometimes, I've done remarkably well avoiding spoilers for upcoming episodes. But the writing was all over the wall that we were headed to a mirror universe (bleh!)
But I'm really liking the show so far, and went in with as open of mind as I could . . . and I really liked the episode, in spite of the mirror universe angle.
I figure either Dr. Culber or Captain Georgiou will be the Terran emperor. Or something totally out of left field, like Spock. Or, perhaps Mirror Universe Captain Lorca was missing (dead/presumed dead? I forget) because he crossed from the MU into the regular timeline long before? Okay, that last one is a stretch.
I didn't see Culber's death coming, and it just feels like there's more to that than "see ya, I forget your name actor who was on My So Called Life." It's anybody's guess as to what will happen in Discovery, but I'm willing to bet this isn't the last we've seen of the doctor. Maybe his mirror universe-self will cross over. Maybe they can repair broken necks in this version of Trek. I neither liked nor disliked Culber, but his character could definitely benefit from being shaken up a bit.
As much as I enjoyed this episode, I still hope they're not going to linger in the mirror universe for too long, but if they do, I would prefer to see lasting ramifications to the ship and crew.
Tilly is annoying as ####, but no question she's delivered some of the funniest lines in the show thus far. I much prefer the mirror universe Captain bad-ass version.
And thank god for the universal translator. Episode nine introduced it, and I was hopeful that the end of the boring as #### Klingon/subtitles was nearing its end; here's to it being a permanent thing going forward.
Final note, I'm pretty sure I've said this before: Discovery is packed full of easter eggs: prop design, sights, sounds--particularly the sounds!--and are such a throwback to all things Star Trek: I just love the background sound of the bridge, doors opening with that iconic 'swoosh,' or when the computers make those synth sounds straight from the 60s.
So glad Discovery's back. It's the only show I'm watching these days (####ing X-Files . . . *grumblegrumble*)
The doctors dead, and he fell flat as a character. He just wasn't that interesting.
I knew he was going to die when they had the kissing scene. "Yup" I said "They're trying to build an oh my god that's awful moment" but really to me he was meh and the breaking of his neck was pretty final.
I'm still convinced that our Lorca is the mirror universe Lorca who vanished, and he's going to make a power play to kill the Emperor using the Discovery and her crew, then he'll send them home. I keep going back to the fact that Lorca activated his own program to get them there.
I feel bad for Emily Coutts, she's had nothing to do at all, they haven't even had a moment between her and Michael where maybe Michael says "Yeah . . . um . . . sorry about the whole face thing . . .my bad"
I'm convinced that the eventual destination of this show is with Burnham, as the captain of the discovery.
I hope they have a mess hall moment in the mirror universe where Burnham sits down to eat and they roll out the mirror Saru on a platter with an apple in his mouth.

Bizarre episode, in that a lot of the logic of it just made you go WTF!?!
Spoiler!
I think that M Night Shamawhatever probably inspired this episode, because its all about the twists over the substance of the twists. Except that there were multiple attempts at twists but two of them were duh.
First of all, we see how brutal the Terran Empire is as they beamed three people into space for thinking bad thoughts about the Emperor.
We finally see some damn facial hair in the mirror universe Sarek has a goatee.
Michael and Tyler go to a world with rebels on it, basically so Michael can learn out how to help aliens get along in her universe.
First of all the answer was a resounding duh as the answer was, we're fighting an evil empire yo, so of course we're going to find a common cause. So clearly Michael has to go back to her universe, turn the Federation into the Empire and oppress all of the other races and they'll come together in peace.
Ok, so Voq is the rebel leader in one universe and Tyler in the other, makes sense. So the Klingons make him go through this grueling transformation to be human so he can spy on the humans and learn their secrets. But as he see's the mirror Voq he gets activated and completely blows his cover. And then back on the ship further blows his assignment and ends up getting beamed into space with the information that the Discovery needs.
Really really stupid and bizarre and probably ends the Voq character. and I'm grateful that Klingon's speak english, but why do they talk like native American's from a bad 80's movie?
ok, so Michael had Tyler as her tether to morality, but now she's lost that except for Lorca who's telling her to be completely Machiavellian, meanwhile Michael helps the rebels to escape by delaying destroying them, and then pretty much watches the slaughter of the rebel as phase two of the duh twist comes and Empress Georgiou shows up and her mentor is evil.
Let me pause so you can get your breath back.
Meanwhile on the Stamets front . Tilly tries to fix him with a spore bath while doing some science stuff, while asking Saru to get her command training if she saves Stamets life. But it fails, he dies, and like Jesus revives himself and we end up seeing him in the Spore world with Mirror Stamets.
I've really like the first episode coming back from the break. But this one just returns to nonsensical logic, bad writing and bad dialogue. The effects were top notch the scene with the Empress bombarding the planet looked amazing.
I'll even give credit as the actors are acting their heart out. But the Michael Tyler romance just doesn't work because they have no real chemistry. Also Michelle Yeoh is just terrible. She basically cardboard cutouts everything she does and her line "Don't you bow to your Emperor" made me laugh because it was so wooden.
oh well, two steps forward 4 steps back so they say.

It was definitely not as strong of an episode as the last -- I'm glad they've got their obvious twist everyone saw coming out of the way though and still have 4 episodes left.
Bizarre episode, in that a lot of the logic of it just made you go WTF!?!
Had pretty much the same thoughts as you on this one... want to like the series but episodes like that one make it tougher.
And completely agree on the Michelle Yeoh comment. I actually thought the same about her on the pilot but figured at least she wasn't going to be around anymore... ugh.
Not as strong an episode overall... a bit too many leaps you have to make there apparently when Voq/Tyler got spaced and a few other things.
I am thinking Voq/Tyler stays in the mirror universe after the return to the Prime universe and replaces mirror Voq. Probably how the mirror universe gets so messed up by DS9 instead of the general nice Klingons we are seeing on Discovery
by the time the incursion by Kirk happens the rebellion is dead, the Vulcan's are basically serving as Star Fleet officer,s but other races are slaves.
The Empire is at its strongest during the Kirk TOS era.
So I guess it kind of makes sense that the Rebellion was probably wiped out by the emperor in that episode and there is no Voq left.
I tend to think that here's what's going to happen.
Spoiler!
Michael is going to work with Lorca to overthrow the Emperor. they hatch a brilliant plot that involves pie. But this leads to Michael ascending to become the Empress, however she is betrayed by Lorca and he takes the throne and sends Discovery back to their universe.
When they return, Michael has a heart to heart with Voq/Tyler, and they do some nasty sex stuff, but it creates a feeling of good will between the two and peace breaks out.
Oh, I'm betting that the Emperors flagship is the Defiant.

I worry the writers have played the 'mirror universe' card too early in the series. We've barely had time to get to know the regular versions of these characters, let alone be amused by their 'evil' alternate reality versions.
The part that bugged me most is... wondering what the heck Discovery is up to? Are they just hanging around, shadowing the Shenzhou? They are in communications range and even transporter range (as they beamed Tyler back), and it's obviously been at least a few days, you'd think they would have received some new orders.
