I think most of that is on their player development though. RNH should be so much better than he is right now.

They still had the chance to trade down and collect assets. I think Burke mentioned that he tried to trade up from 4th but the cost was too high.

I don't think it's so much that the oilers got some pretty crappy 1st overalls but more along the lines of the oilers made some crappy first overall pics. It's been beaten to death that the team would be a lot better with a combo of any of the other players rated around #1. I mean Hall over Seguin??? That's not bad luck, that's bad drafting. The lack of anything good outside of a top 10 pick is proof that they're bad at drafting.

Yep. A smart manager and head scout combo would realize the Yakupov year is not a great year to pick #1 and just trade down a few spots and pick up Reilly, Trouba, etc. Thank god for Katz making them pick Yakupov, gotta love some owner meddling in hockey decisions.

Hall was the first player to ever win back to back Memorial Cup MVPs and many had him ranked #1. So picking him ahead of Seguin at the time was not off the board.

It wasn't off the board but it still wasn't the right decision and most people don't need hindsight to realize that. Seguin is a center, Hall is a winger. Seguin showed a lot more "hockey smarts" then Hall and seemed to be more of a complete player while Hall was just a finisher. It wasn't like the oilers picked someone who shouldn't have been in the top 3 (Yak) they just didn't pick the best possible player. That's their MO.

Can't fault them for Hall over Seguin. That was a coin flip for 1st OA if there ever was one. Even RNH, I could see. At the time they thought they were getting a #1 C to play with their #1 LW. Yakupov is where they went off the rails.

I'm no NHL GM but don't most successful teams try to get that #1 center first? If it's a coin flip, I think you'd have to go with the center before the winger every time. The Hall pick was still a good pick but I don't think it was the best pick.

It likley came down to them thinking Hall was was the BPA. Rewind back to 2010 with Hall's 2 memorial cup MVPs, and it would be a hard choice. Hindsight is obviously 20/20. They also had Gagner (whose shine had yet to wear off) at the time which complicated it further.
If I'm being totally honest, if I had the 1 OA in 2010, I would've picked Hall too. Today I would pick Seguin 10/10 times. A lot can happen in 5-6 years.

I suppose you could make that arguement. Tough to really know right or wrong. I look at the rest of the draft class though and its pretty damn weak so that makes me more inclined to believe this was just a weaker crop of players.

Bored this afternoon, mashed the draft simulator a bunch
As the 6th worst team I ran it 100 times. Flames got:
1st: 9 times
2nd: 7 times
3rd: 9 times
so a total of 25 times picking top 3 out of 100. 25% chance of getting a top 3 pick in my simulation.
(Oilers as the 2nd worst team win the 1st pick 20 times while CBJ as the worst team only won it 13 lol, mirroring reality!)
I know from having clicked it a lot when we were the 5th worst team that that does make a huge difference. This lottery is gonna be interesting!

We need to lose tonight to CBJ. Would put us in a tie for last overall (not taking games in hand into account).

Interesting ranking I found on HF:
http://www.thedraftanalyst.com/prosp...2016-rankings/
1) Matthews (C) -- Because he just is.
2) Chychrun (D) -- Lack of gaudy stats doesn't change what kind of horse he is. We value defensemen with franchise potential. A better defender and smarter with his decisions than Ekblad was at this stage.
3) Laine (W) -- best winger in the draft. Best shot/release of any prospect since Ovechkin, and that includes Stamkos and Kane.
4) Tkachuk (LW) -- off the charts hockey sense and a great shot. I'd even consider converting him to center.
5) Puljujarvi (RW) -- Outstanding player with historic WJC but needs to be more consistent in Liiga play. Looks very good since return.
6) Nylander (W) -- wouldnt be surprised if he goes as high as No. 2. Love the fact that he's low maintenance. Steelheads offense struggled without him
7) Gauthier (RW) -- Was better at WJC's as a pre-draftee than Crouse was last year. Don't buy into low assist totals -- very smart kid with vision. Will score 50+ this year and is not always a first liner on VDO
8) Rubtsov (C) -- Done nothing but rise since the Hlinka. Best player on very talented U18 team, and was deserving of a WJC invite. Has Selke written all over him.
9) Juolevi (D) -- Best offensive skills of any defenseman. Might take a year or two to clean up his coverage, but he's so smart he'll probably do much quicker.
10) Dubois (C/LW) -- If you can grab the 3rd best center of any draft at No. 10, you do it. Can play wing as well but should be groomed as a pivot.
(those comments are the author's)
Wouldn't surprise me if we're a team that has a guy like Chychrun higher than some other teams. Clearcut top 5 of Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, Tkachuk and Chychrun for the Flames IMO. Wouldn't surprise me if a guy like Dubois was top 8 for us. Can't go wrong with a top 10 pick, top 5 would be huge.

We really need a top five pick. A late season run ending up with a later pick really does us a disservice. Making the playoffs by some miracle with no realistic chance of winning the cup is the worst case scenario for the Flames. We need another game breaker, not a serviceable second or third line player.
I know you're not supposed to cheer for losses but... What I find myself doing is hoping for the young guys (Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Ferland, Brodie, Hamilton) to score and a loss by one.

Meh, its going to be what it is going to be the more I read up on a few of the 10-15 range players the more I like them. Mike McLeod comes to mind

After Matthews, Laine would be absoutely perfect for the Flames.

Corey Pronman says he wouldn't fault any team for picking Laine 1st overall.

Gods could you imagine the media hype if 1) the flames drafted Mathews, and 2) Mathews turns out to be a better / generational talent then even McHype up north ? . One can dream.

Matthews looks like a nice player but I think it's safe to say that scenario won't likely play out. They hype is annoying but McDavid is going to be very good. Thankfully he's just about burned through the first year of his entry level deal so he's one year closer to becoming a free agent and heading back east.

I fully expect him to get RFA offers of $11M+.
Can't wait.
