Who do you guys think will have a better career Hunter Smith or Austin Carroll? I think at least one of these guys will get a chance to be our hybrid enforcer. keep in mind Carroll is 1 year older.
Smith has more size, better hands, and more skill IMO. If he can develop that first stride, he'll be an NHLer
I know there are lots of bodies to rotate through, but some of the roster decisions boggle my mind.
At the end of the day, the purpose of the team is to develop prospects for the Flames.
So here's a thought... PLAY THE FRICKING PROSPECTS!!
Especially when the team is last in their division by 5 points.
I hope this org stops "over-signing" they keep two guys too many at pretty much every position at both NHL and AHL levels.
The goalie thing solved itself through injuries and play but even still Ray Emery was available until just this past week picked up by Toronto on a PTO.
No need to load up the roster with the Aaron Johnsons before the season starts. If you run into injuries, then you can find these guys everywhere.

Smith really isn't a good fighter. He's been tuned pretty much every fight this year. Needs to really pick up some technique if he hopes to survive as a pro. Has only going to be effective as a belligerent sob which will require him to fight lots so he better improve on that aspect and at least learn to survive.

Ortio has not been good at all this season. If he doesn't sort himself out soon, I probably would not look at re-signing him.
I'd offer him a contract just to keep his rights but he might be better off going back to Europe to get his game together. Young goalies are unpredictable, so I wouldn't write him off yet.

To retain his rights the Flames would need to offer a qualifying offer of 1 year, 1 way deal @ $660,000; with his play this year Ortio would be stupid to turn it down.

Ortio at his best has been better than Poulin at his best. I would re-sign Ortio to a one year deal.
I very much disagree. Poulin was a little rusty hist first couple games after not playing all year but was still very solid and didn't have what I would call a poor outing before being injured. As for his AHL career his numbers don't tell the whole story because Bridgeport was a pretty terrible team for much of his time there and his NHL experience is definitely an asset when he'd be working so closely with Gillies.
