Why?

And if they did, would Hebdo's response be to shoot up the people who did it? The correct response is to open dialogue via a written condemnation.

To give them a taste of their own medicine.

No one is saying that shooting up the place is an appropriate response but a bunch of grown adults should have the wherewithal to know when to self-censor themselves out of respect to families who lost loved ones.

They're scum parading around like teenagers who are trying to be controversial for the sake of being controversial behind the guise of "freedom of speech".

I'm not sure if such pictures show respect to those people who lost relatives in the plane crash. I am also not sure whether making fun out of people tragic deathes meets the "just requirements of morality".
I agree it is in very poor taste, and it is being made out of jest. So no reason for it at all, however if people don't like it then don't look at it. Do not purchase their paper. If I was Putin I'd be choked too, but what is he going to legitimately do about it?

Man, I sure hope those of you criticizing Charlie Hebdo for this aren't the same ones who tell the "SJWs" and "PC crowd" to lighten up when they get offended about tasteless humour.

They have the right to print what they want.

But they are scum for doing so.

It's one thing to call Corey Perry a girl and another to laugh at children dying.

Well at least you've decreed yourself the authority on this

Anyways, I'm more talking along the lines of rape and domestic violence jokes, and racist humour. The argument I usually hear is something along the lines of "nothing should be off limits," and yet you always inevitably find something that they think crosses the line.

Better arrest those that printed the cartoon, and all those that had the gall to laugh.

Bad taste, sure, but I still haven't heard a compelling reason that this sort of thing should be censored. Too soon? Is it because of children? Because we have all heard jokes around 911, shuttle explosions, and any number of high profile deaths and tragedies. Most are not particularly funny, but I would still defend the right to attempt that humour.

Yeah I also think there is a different between joking amongst friends and printing something in a national (and now, pretty famous internationally) paper.

It's a lot different to make racist or violent jokes to each other than to someone who is on the butt end of the joke.

Would you defend a newspaper's right to print flat out racist jokes against blacks, Jews, Asians, etc?

I never said we should censor them. I said they should know when to censor themselves and they're scum for not.

Not to get too far off track but that's sort of the point of the criticism of the Corey Perry chants. Do it with your buddies if you want, but what type of message does it send to young girls when a stadium full of ding dongs are doing it?

Wait, didn't our vets die to allow Charlie Hebdo to print this type of stuff?

Yeah I don't disagree with that idea. I just personally don't think that it's offensive but lets not open that can of worms.

Yup. Can't (and shouldn't) stop them from printing it, but they should have more tact than that. Poking fun at a deity is one thing, poking fun at actual people who died very recently is a whole different level of scum and villainy.

After having much of the world behind them for the shooting incident, pretty low-brow of them to come out with something like this.

If you don't like the Charlie Hebdo articles, the best thing you can do is look the other way. If people stop paying attention, it becomes economically detrimental for them to keep publishing. They're an any press is good press type publication.

^^^ This.

If you don't like it, don't read it/buy it. And remember that in this day in age, reading it IS buying it.

Just like with Playboy or Hustler or even MAD, no one is forcing you to consume these things.

It is possible, and is in fact the case, where we have Freedom of Speech as a charter right, and laws which limit that freedom, such as hate propaganda sections of the Criminal Code or various human right codes, which prohibits discriminatory speech. If the newspaper is printing racist jokes that are prohibited, then no, that is not protected speech. I haven't read the cartoon in question now, but it seems to me they are actually making fun of Russian politics and French aviation, so I don't see why that would be offside.
