You need to give some credit to the Avs for picking up a goalie for a 2nd who at this point, looks to be growing into a NHLer. I still think the Flames logic in trading him was sound.
|
I'll give them credit when he does it for more than less than a 1/4 of 1 season.
Until then he's just another Brian Boucher, Joey MacDonald, Andrew Hammond, Anders Lindback, Freddie Brathwaite, Ben Scrivens, Patrick Lalime, Matt Hackett, or countless other mediocre goalies who went on hot streaks.

Hey hey hey now. Brathwaite was good for well over a year. Actually great, not good.

Smith to me is kind of like Brian Boyle. A 3rd/4th line type that might be able to chip in some offense and can play that physical nasty game when he needs to.

Maybe below average stats over the course of his entire career. But check those stats in a 2 year span for the flames.

If Smith turned into Boyle I think that would be a huge win for us. Berra isn't gonna last. Even if Smith doesn't pan out it doesn't change the fact that a 2nd round pick was great value.

The trade never looked bad at any point in time.
I'll still take Hunter Smith 10 times out 10, and I'm not a Smith fan at all.

Even when he was with us, he'd go on a hot streak, then a cold streak, not consistent enough to be a starter, as indicated by his recent performance, we won this trade, no doubt.

The whole thing about being a pro is consistency in achieving a level of play
We shall see who wins this one yet, too early to tell.
Berra does have a high end. Consistency aside, does Hunter Smith?

Even if the flames saw something in him, the chance to get a 2nd was too much to pass up.
At best he becomes a starter for a year or 2. Still not worth more than a 2nd at any point.

Depends what you think "high end" potential is? I don't see Berra ever being a full time starter. IMO his "high end" is becoming a good back-up.

Berra is a crap goalie. Berra fans must like him as a human being. He is not a legit NHL goalie.

Smith, we will see. Long time until anyone know if this trade paid off
|
Time will tell what?
Berra is 28 turning 29 in a month and a half and at no point has he shown he is a good goalie in the NHL.
I get that people here saw Kiprusoff so maybe have a skewed view of late developing goalies but we know what Berra is and it isn't anything more than a capable back-up which are a dime a dozen.
As for the pick whether Smith turns out or not should mean nothing for the deal. Way too often people evaluate draft pick deals based on the player picked not the value of the pick.

Berra isn't even a capable backup. He lets in soft goals all the time. He isn't consistent at all and sometimes looks good because he's big and plays the angles pretty good. His lateral movement is awful and NHLers will and have made him look foolish because he over commits and can't get set in time for a different angle.
so glad he's gone.

One of the most fascinating things in the NHL is how a reliable goalie gets you into the playoffs, but to win big, you need a hot goalie. and any NHL level goalie can get hot for a stretch of 10-16 games.
Berra was riding a hot streak. Good for him, maybe he'll learn from it and translate it into his everyday game. But you just can't be fooled by sample sizes and 10 games stretches of goaltending. I mean look at Hammond last year. Was he better than Price? You almost could have made that argument over his hot streak.

So what? Individual game save percentages mean very little. Season sv % is .923. And is more statistically significant
All of the things everybody is saying to disparage Berra presumes he can't be coached to improve these flaws.
By a high end, I mean he can put together a strong quality NHL game. He has had many very strong games. The consistency is where you bring what Kipper brought. Following up a 4 GA game with a 0-2 GA game.
Reality is that he has looked decent this year, I have seen a few Avs games. Their D is not good in front of him either
Anyway, the accepted narrative here is that Hunter Smith could be Pinochet and Flames win this trade.
