I think he plays out his contact and signs elsewhere. I don't see Edmonton villifying him. He gave up several million to help the team build a winner. He gave it his all. After 13 years, it is his right to chase a cup elsewhere.

Edmonton has no picks or prospects. McDavid plays out his contract and walks without the Oilers recovering any kind of futures, this team is looking at a generation to rebuild. I mean, you could argue Calgary's rebuild began the moment Johnny Gaudreau walked for nothing and we're still years away from competing. Imagine what it would be like in Edmonton. The GM up there has a fiduciary obligation to get something in return for McDavid if he's not going to sign long term.
