Why is this something to be sarcastic about? Is there some particular reason why teams are not supposed to sign AHL players while simultaneously working on larger issues?

Because I am, by nature, a sarcastic individual.
What're you going to do about it?

There must be worse things, or we would be doing them instead of this.

Maybe I don’t understand your point.

I thought you were referring to post Flames history. I mean, sure Feaster was a GM before. But not a good one - he inherited a great team and scrapped it. Since the Flames he hasn’t even really worked in hockey.

Well, I don’t see how Treliving can last beyond this year
His legacy would be Johnny and Tkachuk walk for nothing (and whatever he can get for Matty now), horrible UFA signings, bad coaches …..

It would be pretty unbelievable if both JG and MT left in the same offseason.
What free agents would want to come here. It would sewer the franchise.
Insane.

Lose the arena deal
Lose the first playoff BoA in 30 years
Lose Gaudreau as a UFA in heart wrenching fashion
On the brink of losing Tkachuk as well
Quite a 2022 so far lol
Treliving should still not be going anywhere though

Of course it would sewer the franchise! They'd be forced to build through the draft, likely high picks, instead of the tried and true method of "retooling" with overpaid UFA's.
This team needs to give Kadri a 7 year deal north of 7 million so he can get maybe 50 points a year and then give Klinberg the same deal because the avs just won it all by overpaying Cale Makar as a UFA.
Science.

I guess heaven and earth may not be moved afterall to keep players. What a GM - tons of confidence with zero results.

I'm still waiting to see how Tre handles Tkachuk and Mangiapanne/Kylington before passing judgement. If he does a good job handling those 3 I'll give him a pass on Gaudreau

Call me when we've drafted 1st overall 3 times in a row or 4 times in 6 years or draft in the top five 8 out of 10 years, etc, etc, etc
Jesus christ we are not as bad as the oilers because a couple of Americans want to jump ship and leave Canada.

Taking a while to get to 5000

IMO if they decide to rebuild (unlikely) there's a good chance they start over with someone new as GM. If they retool (very likely) he stays a little longer.

The more i think about it, the more i believe we are at a good time for a reset.
I have no desire to rehash each and every move. The man is not a fool and every move can be justified at some level for those who want to play that game.. But eight years later, there simply hasn't been enough progress and the decision to build a championship team around Gaudreau at no point seemed like a winner IMO.
The one argument I have heard for keeping Treliving that is persuasive to me is that given this team's history, there's a good chance the next GM is worse. You can point to the improvement in amateur scouting as part of this but even some of our other bumbling GM's had some great finds in the draft.
I'm willing to take the mystery door at this point.
